A beautiful Brazilian babe became a bashful Punjabi kudi with an ease and élan that had everyone rubbing their eyes in disbelief. A sassy Sri Lankan model, her linguistic shortcoming notwithstanding, charmed cinegoers in a fantasy flick. A busty bombshell from Germany made her way to Indian telly with the hope of getting a foot in the door to Bollywood.
Slim, sexy, saucy and self-assured, a bevy of bold babes boarded the bandwagon to Bollywood in 2009. While Giselle Monteiro personified an immaculate beauty who looked more Indian than many Indians themselves, Jacqueline Fernandez became the first stunner from our southern neighbour, Sri Lanka, to make her mark in Hindi movies.
And then, there were desi girls like Mahi Gill, Shruti Haasan, Shazahn Padamsee and Aamna Sharif wowing us with their looks and talent.
2009 saw a host of debutantes in Bollywood. Here are the top ten that grabbed maximum eyeballs.
Giselle Monteiro
Her identity was kept secret until the release of Love Aaj Kal. Giselle left many cine buffs baffled with her incredibly convincing portrayal of a shy and pretty Punjabi girl in love with Saif Ali Khan in the movie by Imtiaz Ali. Now, after her overnight rise to fame, Giselle is learning Hindi and is aiming for a place in the top league.
Jacqueline Fernandez
Her facial features and shapely bod make Jacqueline Fernandez one of the prettiest babes to step into B-Town this year. Her first film Aladin may have flopped, but Jacqueline has already moved on to her second project ‘Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai’. Funny title, don’t you think?
Mahi Gill
This actress from Punjab gave a new makeover to Paro of Devdas in Anurag Kashyap’s Dev. D. Her intoxicating eyes, sharp features, and most importantly her talent, makes Mahi Gill one of the most promising newcomers of 2009.
Shruti Haasan
Born to a stalwart like Kamal Haasan, some would say acting is in her genes. Shruti Haasan, however, failed to make much mark in her first film Luck which bombed at box office. However, Shruti has much to look forward to.
Claudia Ciesla
Claudia Ciesla managed to stir up a few controversies after landing in Bollywood. She made her debut in a film called ‘Karma’ but became a household name with her stint on ‘Bigg Boss 3’. Now, the gal is pulling up her socks to get a big Bollywood break. Well, she can already speak a bit of Hindi.
Shazahn Padamsee
She was touted as the heroine of Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year, but Shazahn Padamsee was reduced to margins in the movie. Despite the bum rap, this gorgeous daughter of Alique Padamsee and Sharon Prabhakar did show a few flashes of her potential.
Gauhar Khan
Though Gauhar Khan started her acting career in 2003 and also did an item number in Madhur Bhandarkar’s film ‘Aan: Men at Work’ five years ago, she didn’t get a properly fleshed out role until ‘Rocket Singh’ in which her performance has been unanimously appreciated.
Vaishali Desai
Grand niece of Manmohan Desai, Vaishali Desai had quite a forgettable debut alongside Jackie Bhagnani in the superflop Kal Kissne Dekha.
Aamna Sharif
Aamna Sharif made a transition from television to big screen opposite beau Aftab Shivdasani in Aloo Chat. Though the film flopped, Aamna did manage to get a foothold in the industry.
