With exactly a month to go for the big night when the golden-man statuettes will be handed out to the best talents in Hollywood, it makes sense to hark back and take a look at the actors who pocketed big bucks in the year gone by.

In the list of Hollywood’s top 40 earners of 2009 by Vanity Fair, the top spot is obviously hogged by producers and directors like Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Todd Phillips. But a number of male actors have also emerged as the ones claiming the fattest pay-cheques. Surprisingly, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) tops the list, even as the heartthrobs like Johnny Depp and George Clooney trail far behind.

Daniel Radcliffe

Pocketing $20 million for the penultimate Potter film, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ and another $20 mn for the film’s second part, Daniel Radcliffe is the highest earning male actor of 2009. Not to forget the million bucks he’s made as royalties from older films.

Ben Stiller

Funnyman Ben Stiller comes second with overall estimated earnings of $40 million in 2009. Half of this amount, $20 million, comes from his acting fee for ‘Little Fockers’. Comedy may be a serious business but it does pay well.

Tom Hanks

Oscar winner Tom Hanks got $19 million for his portrayal of the symbologist Robert Langdon in Angels & Demons. His voiceover in ‘Toy Story 3’ fetched him another $15 million. If you add to the figure the royalties of $2 mn from past flicks, you get the aggregate sum of $36 million.

Tyler Perry

The multi-talented Tyler Perry’s estimated earnings for 2009 stand at $32.5 million out of which $19 million alone comes from ‘Madea Goes to Jail’.

Adam Sandler

He is learnt to have pocketed a whopping $25 million for the upcoming comedy ‘Grown Ups’ which he’s also written. Adam Sandler’s annual earnings of 2009 stand at an estimated $31.5 million.

Denzel Washington

With an acting fee of $15 million each for ‘The Book of Eli’ and ‘Unstoppable’, Denzel Washington takes the sixth spot in the highest earning male actors of Hollywood. His estimated earnings for 2009 – $31 million
