Caravan migrants break Guatemala border fence, rush Mexico

Trump threatens to send troops to border to stop migrant caravan

The caravan of thousands of Honduran migrants marching towards the USA dramatically turned around as they reached the Mexican border in Guatemala on Friday morning, a day after hundreds of their comrades faced off with police.

In a string of tweets on Thursday, Trump also appeared to link the issue to trade and a newly minted deal with Mexico to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement pact that is awaiting ratification.

The much talked about caravan of Central American migrants has been forced to turn around at the Mexico-Guatemala border.

Changes to detention rules saw thousands of migrant children detained and separated from their parents earlier this year, sparking national and global condemnation.

The re-emergence of immigration as a pressing concern in the USA comes in the middle of heated midterm elections, and Mr. Trump has featured the issue in political rallies held around the country on behalf of Republican congressional candidates.

But in Mexico, where protesters alreadyhave been marching in support of the approaching Honduran migrants, caving to US pressure wouldn't play almost as well.

The group of Central American migrants has made its intentions clear: they are heading to the US.

Trump's tweets Thursday came one day after the Washington Post reported record numbers of migrant parents attempting to enter the United States with their children during the last three months after the Trump administration ended a controversial policy of separating families at the border.

Migrants have been known to cross the river on rafts for years - sometimes encountering authorities along the way, sometimes meeting little resistance as they slipped into Mexico and continued their journey north.

Military officials instructed troops to alert border agents if they encountered migrants, rather than intervene themselves except in cases of self defence.

The migrants are fleeing their country because of violence and poverty.

Pompeo is scheduled to meet Fridaywith Peña Nieto and Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, as well as Lopez Obrador's designated foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard.

Mexican authorities prepared to receive the migrants and determine who would get refugee status and who will be deported back to their country.

"I chose to come because of the unemployment situation", said Wendy Lorena Benitez Ramirez, 43.

It remains unclear how many migrants were able to successfully enter Mexico by force.

More than 2,000 Hondurans are in a migrant caravan trying to reach the United States.

"It is a plan that we have, that anyone who wants to work in Mexico will have a work visa", he said.

On Thursday, Trump referred to the caravan as an "assault on our country", citing "criminal elements and drugs pouring in".

"It was predictable and also the election process is very close, so he is making a political calculation", he added.
