Saudi journalist disappears from consulate in Turkey

'Where Is Jamal?' Here's What to Know About Missing Washington Post Columnist Jamal Khashoggi

"We are ready to welcome the Turkish government to go and search our premises", he said, which is Saudi sovereign territory.

"If Saudi authorities surreptitiously detained Khashoggi it would be yet another escalation of Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman's reign of repression against peaceful dissidents and critics", Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement issued Thursday.

"If returned to Saudi Arabia, Jamal Khashoggi would be in serious danger given the pattern of flagrantly unfair trials that have been leading to long prison sentences and even the death penalty", Maalouf said in a statement on Friday.

Khashoggi's fiancée refuted Saudi Arabia's claims to Reuters.

"The disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, the well-known Washington Post journalist, by the Saudi Arabian Consulate on October 2 at around 13.30 p.m. local time has been a matter of widespread speculation and debate", said Turan Kislakci, head of the Turkish-Arab Media Association (TAM), in a gathering outside the Istanbul consulate, demanding answers from officials. It called on Turkey to deepen its investigation into the case.

Press freedom watchdogs also raised red flags, while the Washington Post, which has regularly featured Khashoggi's writing since past year, published a blank space where his column would normally appear.

Women were also prevented from entering Mumbai's Haji Ali Dargah mausoleum until the high court scrapped the rule in 2016. Four judges supported the lifting of ban whereas Justice Indu Malhotra proposed a dissenting opinion supporting the ban.

But Saudi Arabia claim he entered and later left the mission on Tuesday.

Sophie Anmuth, head of the Middle East desk for Reporters Without Borders, called on both governments to ensure Khashoggi reappears quickly.

The Arab21 news website reported that the author paid a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week, but was told by officials at the time to return at a later date to complete an application related to a family matter. Hatice Cengiz tweeted in the early hours of Saturday. She told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that she believed Khashoggi "was kidnapped in this gangster's den that is supposed to be a consulate".

The Saudi Consulate insists Khashoggi left its building, contradicting Turkish officials who say they believe he is still there.

"The crown prince has been all over the United States preaching his vision of a more modern Saudi society, breaking out of the stale old religious codes and practices, opening up to foreign entertainment and investment", the Post editorial board wrote Friday. "But I said King - we're protecting you - you might not be there for two weeks without us - you have to pay for your military".

Notably, Khashoggi would not be the only Gulf national to have been arrested overseas to be returned to the kingdom, and other incidents have been far more public.
