Theresa May speech reaction as Prime Minister pledges to end austerity

Jeremy Wright speaks at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham

On the final day of her party's conference, Mrs May rallied members, trying to address their concerns that the Conservatives are becoming increasingly directionless under the weight of Brexit by calling on them to look to a brighter future.

Standing firmly by her Brexit plan, denounced by Boris Johnson as a "constitutional outrage", Mrs May promised: "If we stick together and hold our nerve, I know we can get a deal that delivers for Britain".

The prime minister said that support for public services would go up next year, but she didn't explain where the money would come from and said it depended on a good Brexit deal.

May's unexpectedly disarming conference speech followed, exhorting the party to come together, or Brexit is at risk.

May has had a tough year since a disastrous 2017 conference speech, when she was her plagued by a cough and interrupted by a prankster while parts of the backdrop fell down as she was speaking. "No, because I think we probably can't have the self-indulgence of a leadership challenge".

Though Labour MP Angela Rayner described the dance with the hashtag cringe, Scottish National Party MP Joanna Cherry said May's dance was "an affront to my favorite song".

Labour Party chairman Ian Lavery said: "While the country is crying out for real change, all Theresa May and her party offer are pinched ideas and tinkering around at the edges, relying on petty attacks to cover up their lack of vision".

In a pitch for voters in the centre ground turned off by Corbyn's leadership and the protracted rows over anti-Semitism, she said she wanted the "decent, moderate and patriotic" Conservatives to be "a party for the whole country". Forty-eight lawmakers would be needed to trigger a vote of confidence.

May awkwardly took a spin around, robotically pumped her arms in the air on Wednesday and had a brief laugh at her own expense before a key speech.

Johnson, who became the figurehead for the campaign to leave the European Union, has been one of her loudest critics, describing her plans to keep close ties with the bloc as "deranged" and little more than a bid to turn Britain into a vassal state.

Gildo-Mazzon says she contacted Ford's lawyers after reading her account in a Washington Post story published on September 16. Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual misconduct by two other women, putting his nomination for the high court at risk.

Here are the main announcements from the Prime Minister following her speech on Wednesday.

Addressing such speculation, Johnson said that Chancellor Philip Hammond's prediction that he would never be prime minister was "one of the first treasury forecasts in a long time to have a distinct ring of truth". "There must be no return", she said.

May and her team are braced for a gruelling set of discussions: with EU leaders, with her parliamentary partners in the DUP, and with the European Commission, all the while withstanding ferocious friendly fire.

"Sound finances are essential, but they are not the limit of our ambition", she added.

While he acknowledged that supporting a protest motion was a different matter to voting down an actual deal, he said the Government whips would still struggle to get it through the House.

It was inevitable comparisons would be made with the man who has become her political nemesis, Boris Johnson.

Mrs May and her team face weeks of hard conversations with Brussels to win a deal, but she also faces challenges from inside her own party and from her partners in parliament, Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party.

May insists her ideas offer the only way to protect jobs and trade while also avoiding physical checks on Britain's land border with European Union member Ireland. "Our best days lie ahead of us".

"So this is our proposal". Good for jobs, good for the union.

She was backed by the Leader of the Commons Andrea Leadsom - a prominent Leave campaigner in the referendum - who said it met her "red lines" for Brexit.
