Roe v. Wade has ‘been reaffirmed many times,’ Kavanaugh says

A protester is removed as circuit judge Brett Kavanaugh prepares to testify before his Senate confirmation hearing to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington DC USA 04 September

"No one is above the law in our constitutional system", he said.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) accused Democrats of trying to conduct the hearing by "mob rule". Republicans countered Kavanaugh's judicial opinions, which should be the greatest indicators of his qualifications, are public record and should be the focus of the hearing. In Meyer v. Nebraska, the Court struck down a Nebraska law that prohibited teaching foreign languages in public schools to young students, finding that it violated the right to liberty, which includes the right to "establish a home and bring up children".

"The Brett Kavanaugh hearings for the future Justice of the Supreme Court are truly a display of how mean, angry, and despicable the other side is", Trump wrote on Twitter.

What were the protests about?

Hey, remember when President Donald Trump said he has the "absolute right" to pardon himself? Sen.

Others claimed the judge would let people with pre-existing medical conditions be stripped of medical coverage. Another cried: "Our democracy is broken!" Right as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley (R-IA) moves to begin, Democrats interjected and made motions to adjourn the hearing, pointing to the thousands of documents that have yet to be reviewed.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee mounted a coordinated effort to derail the Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Judge Brett Kavanaugh on September 4, delaying the chairman's opening remarks with more than an hour of out-of-order objections.

Going into Tuesday's hearing, White House aides believe their nominee's task of introducing himself to the country hasn't been made more hard in the weeks leading up to this hearing. They also examined the bracelets he wears on his wrist to commemorate Jaime.

Monday night, some 42,000 documents pertaining to Kavanaugh's work with previous administrations were released to the committee.

Kavanaugh said he knew nothing about the accusations and that he was not on an email list Kozinski allegedly used to send inappropriate material.

But the panel chairman refused to delay the process. He likened it to another controversial, landmark Supreme Court decision, the Miranda ruling about the rights of criminal suspects. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, at one point called for the removal of a "loudmouth" protester. She tweeted Wednesday that "of course" Kavanuagh will "help gut or overturn Roe v. Wade", pointing to the support for him by "anti-abortion groups".

Why is the nomination contentious?

But as part of a larger pattern of providing legitimacy and normality, it's worse than regrettable. The consultant and media figure hasn't shied away from such accusations.

Feinstein had asked the question in the context of United States v. Nixon, the 1974 unanimous Supreme Court ruling ordering then-President Nixon to hand over tape recordings from his White House that ultimately led to his resignation.

The nine-justice court has until now been balanced between conservatives and liberals, with Anthony Kennedy considered the "swing vote".

Feinstein asked Kavanaugh about his 2009 article that concluded sitting presidents should be free from the distractions of civil lawsuits, criminal prosecutions and investigations.

Republicans hold a one-vote majority in the Senate.

A security guard stepped in as Mr Kavanaugh turned and left the witness table. There were no signs of Republican defections.

Senator Ben Sasse used his time to say how much he was exhausted of the theatrics and "patently absurd" criticisms that had been lobbed at Kavanaugh that he claimed were not based on truth or even anything to do with the nominee but rooted in misdirected political fervor.

The entire Senate will most likely vote on confirmation by the end of the month. The court begins its next term in October.

Guttenberg is attending the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing as a guest of Senator Dianne Feinstein.

A resident of the wealthy Washington suburb of Chevy Chase, Mr Kavanaugh studied law at Yale.

Kavanaugh worked in key White House positions when George W. Bush was president and was a member of independent counsel Kenneth Starr's legal team that investigated President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s, leading to Clinton's impeachment.

Kavanaugh, appointed to the US Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit by Bush, served the president in the White House Counsel's Office from 2001 to 2003 and as staff secretary from 2003 to 2006.

"I've tried to be a very collegial judge".
