Steve Bannon Calls David Remnick 'Gutless'

New Yorker makes embarrassing climb down and CANCELS Steve Bannon's festival appearance

NEW YORK (TNS) - The New Yorker caused a wave of controversy Monday after announcing that former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon would headline the 19th annual New Yorker Festival. "And it was announced on a weekend just before tix went on sale", John Mulaney said on Twitter. Immediately, Twitter came alive.

Before his role with the Trump campaign, Mr Bannon helped found Breitbart News - a right-wing USA online news and commentary website.

Carrey simply wrote, "Bannon?". Longtime readers threatened to cancel their subscriptions. The consultant and media figure hasn't shied away from such accusations.

A number of celebrities who were also slated to participate at the event, including Jim Carrey, Judd Apatow and Patton Oswalt, all backed out upon learning that Bannon was scheduled to be interviewed there by top New Yorker editor David Remnick.

"Mr. Bannon stands for a world view that is antithetical to the liberal values The Economist has always espoused", she wrote.

Breach exposed details of 2 million T-Mobile US customers
Announced by T-Mobile this morning, the carrier was hit by a data breach on August 20, with roughly 2 million customers affected. T-Mobile said the hacker (or hackers) did not gain access to passwords, social security numbers, or any financial information.

"I don't want well-meaning readers and staff members to think I've ignored their concerns", Remnick said in a statement Monday evening.

Ben Stiller is not scheduled to be a part of the fest but wanted in on pulling out anyway, writing "I totally was available to fill in when everyone dropped out but would have so quickly said no f-ing way if they had asked, but now it's all moot, so never mind". "There is a better way to do this". "Our writers have interviewed Steve Bannon for The New Yorker before, and if the opportunity presents itself I'll interview him in a more traditionally journalistic setting as we first discussed, and not on stage", he said. But as part of a larger pattern of providing legitimacy and normality, it's worse than regrettable. Lena Dunham's ex-boyfriend wouldn't have been able to stop it.

That's good. Remnick also deserves credit for something far more significant: Giving Ronan Farrow's stellar investigative work on Harvey Weinstein a safe harbor a year ago after NBC failed to provide adequate support. And I tend to agree. "In what I would call a defining moment, David Remnick showed he was gutless when confronted by the howling online mob", he said. He's been normalized. His platform is running the White House (or, more likely, golfing).

"I've thought this through and talked to colleagues - and I've re-considered", Remnick, who has repeatedly denounced US President Donald Trump and his administration, wrote in a statement of his decision on Bannon. This might be an icky task, but it's also an important one, and as an experienced interviewer, David Remnick was up to it.

"The reaction on social media was critical and a lot of the dismay and anger was directed at me and my decision to engage him", Remnick said, adding that staff members had also objected to the invitation. "The point of an interview, a rigorous interview, particularly in a case like this, is to put pressure on the views of the person being questioned".
