Ailing young orca J-50 gets novel medical treatment at sea

The J Pod was seen earlier Thursday, but neither J50 nor J35, the orca carrying her dead calf, were immediately seen.

Scientists are also anxious about another member of the endangered orcas.

Teams of whale experts are racing out to sea to help an ailing young killer whale spotted between the US and Canada.

An ailing and emaciated orca named Scarlet may get food and antibiotics soon - if biologists can find her before it's too late.

Brad Hanson, a wildlife biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association in the United States, said removing the calf, in order to encourage the whale to forage, is not an option. The NOAA response team treated J50 with a long-acting broad-spectrum antibiotic through a dart while they await results of the whale's health assessment.

For now, the unprecedented attempt to feed live salmon to a free-swimming killer whale would have to wait.

Tahlequah, referred to by scientists as J35, was spotted Wednesday by Canadian scientists pushing the body of her calf off the coast of the Olympic Peninsula.

He says the whale is incredibly skinny but was swimming well and there were no obvious signs of abnormality with her skin. NOAA would apply for the feeding permit if conditions are right, said Lynne Barre, NOAA Fisheries' recovery coordinator for the whales.

A veterinarian examined the orca.

The carcass is "surprisingly intact", she said.

Police have also released surveillance photos, taken from a distance, that appear to show the bicyclists crossing paths. Police searched his home at 4 a.m., August 1, and have been in contact with Spencer.

"It is very possible she has succumbed at this point and we may never see her again", Rowles said.

"This is a novel undertaking", Hanson said. What would be unique is giving the orca medication through live fish, Rowles said.

US and Canadian officials acknowledged Thursday that they're concerned that J35's apparent grieving process could prevent her from foraging, but they have no plans to intervene at this point to remove the dead calf. "It's very hard to say, but certainly they're very intelligent animals and the loss of this animal is quite profound for both the (killer whales) and I think for everyone who witnesses this".

"Even if her family is foraging for and sharing fish with her, J35 can not be getting the. nutrition she needs to regain any body-mass loss that would have naturally occurred during the gestation of her fetus and also additional loss of nutrition during these weeks of mourning", she said.

The young whale is one of just 75 of the fish-eating orcas that frequent the inland waters of Washington state.

An global team of experts is waiting to get close to the 3½-year-old killer whale known as J50 so they can carry out a step-by-step emergency plan that includes giving her antibiotics or feeding live salmon at sea.

The whales face nutritional stress over a lack of Chinook salmon as well as threats from toxic contamination and vessel noise and disturbances.

The calf died July 24 and the image of the 20-year-old mother whale clinging to the dead calf has struck an emotional chord worldwide.

Losing J50 also would mean losing her reproductive potential, Hanson said. She was last seen Thursday still carrying the body.

The Puget Sound calf was the first in three years to be born to the dwindling population of endangered southern resident killer whales.
