Putin Proposed Eastern Ukraine Referendum to Trump, Bloomberg Reports

68% of Republicans approve Trump's handling of summit, poll finds

The detention came following a Monday meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

After Monday's summit with Putin, Trump said he had "confidence in both parties" when asked whether he trusted the Russian president or US intelligence agencies.

A major source of public confusion was Trump's statement during Monday's joint press conference in Helsinki that he did not believe that Russian Federation could have interfered in the most recent U.S. presidential elections.

Trump was also reportedly surprised at the backlash and negative media coverage of the meeting, where he refused to condemn Russian Federation for interfering in the 2016 election.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Putin critic, tweeted after the exchange that he'd have the ball checked for listening devices and "never allow it in the White House".

The announcement appeared to come as a surprise to US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, who was told about it during a live interview at the Aspen Security Forum in the state of Colorado.

GOP officials from across the country said they were willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, believing that he probably was much firmer with Putin in private than he was in his public performance. Another resolution would have backed the finding by US intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election. One thing we do know is that Trump does endorse a deal on Syria that Putin struck the week before with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

With Putin at his side, Trump said of American intelligence officials: "They said they think it's Russian Federation". People were speculating whether Putin had some sort of leverage over Trump that was making him behave in this manner.

"This issue was discussed", he said, adding without elaborating that Putin made "concrete proposals" to Trump on solutions for the Ukraine conflict.

The ruling effectively prohibited states from banning abortion before a fetus could be considered viable outside of the womb. Wade , about whether it will be overturned. "The kind of cases that will come up will probably be like that", said Russell.

The Kremlin has yet to formally respond to the proposal, but Mr Trump has said he is looking forward to his second meeting with Mr Putin.

"The Russian effort to influence the 2016 presidential campaign is just one tree in a growing forest", he said.

Other GOP officials struggled to reconcile their aggressive Charlottesville response and their silence on Putin, but had little appetite for condemning the Republican president.

The idea of allowing a foreign power to quiz US citizens sparked outrage and the US Senate voted 98-0 against it. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it was "not going to happen".

Sen. Ben Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, called his comments "bizarre and flat-out wrong"; Arizona's Jeff Flake deemed them "shameful"; and Lindsey Graham of SC said they will be perceived as "a sign of weakness".

He last visited the White House in 2005, when he met President George W. Bush, who welcomed the Russian leader in the East Room as "my friend".

"Look, the fact is we got along well", Trump said in the interview, which was taped on Thursday.

HORSLEY: And whatever tough policies the White House may have adopted towards Moscow have to be weighed against Trump's rhetoric, which is consistently friendly to Putin.

"At this stage, when we see that our leaders don't meet that often, we are of course in favor of continuing this dialogue so that it is ongoing, that our leaders meet not just occasionally, but regularly, so they would know and understand each other better".
