Egypt sarcophagus tomb OPENED despite risk of DEADLY black magic curse

The tomb dating back to the Ptolemaic period found in the Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria

Egyptian media had raised concerns that they could be about to unleash 2,000-year-old vengeance on the city of Alexandria, but things seem okay so far.

The opening of the sarcophagus dashed hopes that it contained the body of Alexander.

The coffin was found in a tomb in the city believed to be the final resting place of Alexander the Great and dates back to the Ptolemaic period between 305BC and 30BC. The granite coffin was opened Thursday, July 19, at the construction site where it was discovered.

Shortly after being unearthed, British news outlets speculated about the tomb's contents and a possible ancient curse, citing a string of deaths after the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb in the early 1900s. Seriously. According to The Sun, when you disturb an ancient Egyptian tomb, you risk getting stricken with the "curse of the pharaohs".

People were notably shaken by the discovery. "Archaeologists, and even their family members, died from terrible illnesses or in odd accidents - and some say the deaths weren't a coincidence".

Egyptian archeologists have opened a 30-tonne black granite sarcophagus to find three decomposed mummies after sewage water apparently leaked inside.

Egyptian archaeologists reveal contents of mysterious giant sarcophagus in Alexandria

Due to the tomb's meager decor, scientists believe the mummies could have been soldiers from the Ptolemaic period, post 323 BC: one of the skulls showed marks consistent with arrow wounds.

Three decomposed mummies were found in the sarcophagus, declared Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri.

The skeletons discovered inside the coffin will be transferred to the Alexandria National Museum for restoration, the Ministry of Antiquity said on its website.

The ministry said it was likely that sewage water had seeped through a fracture in the coffin. The exact location of his tomb remains a mystery.

He further pointed out that no evidence such as silver or gold metallic masks, small statues, amulets or inscriptions were found to prove that the mummies belong to a royal family.

When a black granite sarcophagus was found at the bottom of a pit in Alexandria, Egypt, this past week, the discovery immediately prompted questions and theories ranging from the sensible to the supernatural.
