Gareth Southgate has nation preparing for Waistcoat Wednesday

Gareth Southgate England manager World Cup 2018

Ahead of Wednesday evening's semi-final against Croatia, Southgate urged everyone to put differences to one side to cheer his side into what would be a first World Cup final in 52 years.

The 27-year-old created more chances (6) in a single World Cup game than any other player in the tournament so far, and in the Three Lions' 2-0 quarter-final win over Sweden, Trippier had passing accuracy rate of 75%, whilst also putting in ten unsafe crosses during the 90 minutes.

So what are you waiting for?

And no matter what happens on Wednesday, Southgate insists their World Cup run is merely the beginning of what he believes will be a fruitful legacy. It's wonderful because I was one of those kids growing up who wanted to play for England.

"I'll tell you a story about me and superstitions", Southgate said.

He said: "Well, I think I've said this before, but I was not a renowned fashion icon throughout my playing career, so it's rather unusual to feel that way now".

Southgate said England's dramatic improvement since Euro 2016, which ended with a humiliating defeat by Iceland in the last 16, was down to the FA's backing.

African players in France's World Cup team
- France's Kylian Mbappe (three) is the highest scoring teenager in a World Cup tournament since Pele scored six in 1958. If we do not make it to the final, or do not become world champions, that would also be a disappointment.

Asked at his eve-of-match press call if he had been inundated by requests for tickets to England's biggest match in a generation, Southgate revealed he had only invited his loved ones to Moscow.

"The style of play has changed and so have attitudes". So, I went to the kit-man and I borrowed a pair of black goalkeeper socks. "We are one step closer to what is the biggest game in football as a professional". Belgium, I thought, did great against Brazil - them going out was a great bonus for us.

"I know my strengths and I know I'm no David Beckham!"

"I don't know what you're saying in the dressing room to the players, but whatever you're saying, it's working".

"The atmosphere for every game has been unbelievable, and as we've progressed through the tournament it's only got better".

He said: "It's a special feeling to know that the people back home and out here in Russian Federation are enjoying the experience just as much as we are".

"We also feel we've had events on when we've been in camp when some of those guys [from the 1966 squad] have been in, when the road was named at St George's [Park National Football Centre, England's training base at home] after Sir Alf [Ramsey, the World Cup-winning coach in 1966]".
