Dr. Stang says he doesn't fear having more frequent warnings will make people pay less attention to them. The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. The deaths were not concentrated in any specific municipality. "Daytime highs again will be near mid-thirties with humidex near mid-forties".

"It could save a life", Genereux said.

Heat warnings are issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada to inform the public when air temperature and humidex are forecast to be above a certain criteria for two consecutive days. The Montreal authorities have called on local people to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness.

Toronto's longest heat wave was 12 days in 1953, but the city sees a heat wave lasting a week or so about every five to 10 years, Ms. Hobelman said.

Families of some patients in Montreal's hospitals have spoken out, saying that not all hospital floors in the city are air conditioned.

The move is part of the federal government's climate change adaptation in expectation of more frequent heat events.

"Usually in a normal situation we have 10 deaths per day, so we're not in an excess of mortality", Drouin said. "We are going to see a handsome weekend coming up with lower humidity but then we will see the temperatures going right back up into the 30s", he said.

She said on Tuesday that Urgences-Sante had reported a 30 per cent rise in ambulance transports since the beginning of the heat wave, up to about 1,200 per day.
