Immigration protests today: Trump immigration policies protested in many United States cities today

Protesters, lawmaker arrested in U.S. Senate building over immigration

USA TODAY has compiled a guide to safely participating in protests. We will build a country that reflects our values.

"It's abhorrent (and) evil", Crook said.

And there were plenty of signs and shirts declaring, "I really do care, do u?" - a dig at the jacket first lady Melania Trump wore while departing for a trip to the southwest border last week.

Rallies were to take place in 750 cities big and small all over the country, Galland said, as people stand up for the rights of migrant families.

About 750 similar protests have been planned throughout the country in every state, from big cities such as NY and Los Angeles, to tiny ones such as Antler, North Dakota, population 28, and Willmar, population about 20,000.

There, people held American and Texas flags and signs depicting a migrant father, mother and child as the Holy Family with haloed heads traveling through the desert.

The four cities sought on Friday (June 29) to block a move by the US Justice Department to modify a 1997 settlement on behalf of underage immigrants that prevents the government from locking up children captured crossing the border illegally with their family. Drivers honked their horns in support.

"Separating families, especially young children, without a plan to reunite them is abhorrent", Stokes said.

"Jesus was a refuge", she said.

The Washington protest was to begin in Lafayette Square - directly across from the White House - before a march toward the Capitol.

Celebrities like John Legend, Kerry Washington, Diane Guerrero and Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the hit Broadway musical, "Hamilton" are expected to attend the protests, among many others.

"The overall goal is to end family detentions", she told Breitbart, "to ultimately remove Trump and his enablers from office, however that happens in whatever time frame, and to lay the groundwork for a new set of policies in this country based on human decency and mutual respect". "Seeing everyone together for this cause, it's emotional".

Protesters are calling for the abolition of ICE, which enforces the controversial zero-tolerance policy that has led to separation of over 2,000 children.

People across many major towns and cities in the USA had been urged to gather under the slogan #familiesbelongtogether.

Democratic senators Mazie Hirono, Tammy Duckworth, Kirsten Gillibrand and Jeff Merkley, who have been critical of Trump's immigration policies, spoke with some of the protesters. They carried signs reading: "No more children in cages", and "What's next?"

On Twitter, the Families Belong Together coalition applauded the tens of thousands of Americans planning to march on Saturday, and urged the public to continue fighting the Trump administration's anti-immigration agenda in the weeks and months ahead.

The protest was organized and promoted by Women's March, the same group that mounted a massive protest effort a year ago shortly after President Donald Trump took office.

Thousands of demonstrators, baking in the heat and boiling mad at United States immigration policy, marched across the country Saturday to protest the separation of families under President Donald Trump's hardline agenda.

"I'm not a radical, and I'm not an activist", said Kate Sharaf, a Portland co-organizer. "I don't think it's just part of the "resistance" energy we've seen since the election", Morales Rocketto said.

Immigrant advocacy groups say they're thrilled to see the issue gaining traction.

"Honestly, I am blown away".
