Feds charge 600 in opioid fraud that bilked $2B from government and insurers

They were among 13 people, including five doctors, a chiropractor, three licensed physical and occupational therapists and two pharmacy owners charged with Medicare and Medicaid fraud.

The arrests were described by the agency as the "largest healthcare fraud take-down in us history".

Over the past decade, both the Justice Department and U.S. Attorney's Office have coordinated yearly efforts to spotlight the latest crackdown on healthcare fraud offenders from Miami to West Palm Beach by agents with the FBI, Health and Human Services and Internal Revenue Service.

Already, Sessions said, enforcement has resulted in lower billing levels in some government health programs, with billings for Medicare Part A and Part B - which cover inpatient care and many physician-prescribed drugs, respectively - dropping by 20 percent in districts with fraud strike forces. Another in Texas alleges that a pharmacy owner and pharmacist conspired to fill orders for over 1 million opioid doses, which were then sold to "drug couriers" for millions of dollars.

Authorities said the nationwide schemes involved billing Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies for medically unnecessary prescription drugs and other medications that were sometimes never purchased or distributed. Today the Department of Justice is announcing the largest health care fraud enforcement action in American history.

"In many cases, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists take advantage of people suffering from drug addiction in order to line their pockets", Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement.

Arrests were made in states across the country. These are despicable crimes. In addition, the operation includes the participation of the DEA, DCIS, and State Medicaid Fraud Control Units.

That data, HHS Deputy Inspector General Gary Cantrell said, had enabled the agency to identify 300 prescribers "whose questionable opioid prescribing is worthy of further investigation". "This year's Takedown Day is a significant accomplishment for the American people, and every public servant involved should be proud of their work".

In "many" cases, the DOJ said, patient recruiters, beneficiaries and other co-conspirators were allegedly paid cash kickbacks in return for supplying beneficiary information to providers, so the providers could submit fraudulent bills to Medicare.

The arrests came in dozens of unrelated prosecutions the Justice Department announced together as part of an annual healthcare fraud takedown. They were all participants in fraud schemes, which resulted in the Department of health lost more than $ 2 billion.

Another defendant is accused of running a "false-front" pharmacy in which the identities of patients and doctors were stolen to bill for prescriptions that patients never received, he said.

Sessions went on to say 162 people were charged, specifically in regard to opioid distribution.
