Spirited Australia draw with Denmark at World Cup

Denmark's forward Martin Braithwaite, left, vies with Australia's midfielder Jackson Irvine during the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Group C football match at the Samara Arena in Samara on Thursday.

Mile Jedinak scored from the penalty spot as Australia came from behind to draw 1-1 with Denmark in Thursday afternoon's Group C clash at the 2018 World Cup.

Both teams' hopes of advancing will be settled in the final round of Group C matches, when Australia take on Peru and Denmark meet France. We have a few players who are at a higher level than them if you look at the squads player by player.

Van Marwijk, who replaced Ange Postecoglou at the helm of the Australian team in January, handed 19-year-old Arzani another chance to impress after a late cameo appearance against France.

"We're still in with a sniff", said Jedinak after the game.

Having got back into the game, Australia seemed imbued with a renewed sense of belief, surging forward whenever they could and roared on by the vast array of green and gold clad fans in the Samara Arena.

Christian Eriksen scored in the opening minutes for Denmark, which has gone unbeaten in 17 straight global matches.

With so much on the line, much has been made of just how Australia will look to shackle the creativity of Eriksen, who netted a hat-trick as Denmark beat the Republic of Ireland 5-1 in their qualifying play-off second leg in Dublin.

Eriksen opens the scoring against the Socceroos.

Leckie continued to impress for Australia in a wide position, and the number seven forced Schmeichel to make another save in the 75th minute.

Australia coach Bert van Marwijk was frustrated by his side's missed chances and thought they should have won at least one of their first two games. Instead, Denmark fell victim to the system, which has worked well so far in the World Cup but isn't ideal.

"We had chances to win and we deserved to win, so I'm disappointed", the Dutchman said.

"They are a physically strong team, very tall players, that's their weapon and we played against France and they have more quality and creativity in their players, but I think the Danish are maybe more of a team". We just try and do our jobs better.
