Prof John Stremlau on the Trump-Kim Summit

Donald Trump with South Korean President Moon Jae-in

The meeting was the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

US President Donald Trump says his historic talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that ended in a joint agreement were "tremendous".

Kim, though, did get something valuable - a meeting with a sitting USA president (something his father and grandfather never accomplished, despite great efforts). To Trump, perhaps the instantaneous media mileage generated by the event was more important than negotiating a truly consequential deal, which, according to leading experts, may take more than a decade to complete. They wanted the respect that came with being seen as equals to the United States.

And as they emerged from the meal for a brief stroll together, Trump appeared to delight in showing his North Korean counterpart the interior of "The Beast", the famed US presidential limousine known for its high-tech fortifications.

The White House was being panned for making hasty preparations for one of the most historic summits between the sitting leaders of the United States and North Korea, but it seems Donald Trump's administration put more planning into it than people are giving them credit for.

Trump, who praised Kim and hailed the summit as a success while he was still in Singapore, said that he feels "very little" disappointment that he didn't secure a bigger commitment from Kim as part of the talks. "Of those alive today, only a small number will leave a lasting impact", the trailer begins. The North Korean president used his New Year's address to wish the South Koreans good luck in hosting the Winter Olympics.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing US troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the USA was "prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America's been willing to provide previously".

There was almost ubiquitous (77% in CNN's May poll) American support for President Donald Trump's decision to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Despite 10 years as a casino worker in Las Vegas and Atlantic City before switching to film, Castaldo said he had never met Trump or worked in a Trump casino. There are even discussions of a Nobel peace prize for Trump and the Kim. Before leaving himself, Trump tossed out pronouncements on US alliances, human rights and the nature of the accord that he and Kim had signed.

Scores more homes destroyed by lava flow on Hawaii's Big Island
Those who live or vacation in the area were mourning the loss of popular tide-pools where kids enjoyed swimming. Lava destroyed hundreds of homes in mostly rural Hawaii area overnight, a county spokeswoman said.

Trump was smiling when he said it, but he wasn't joking.

Asked about the issue after the meeting, President Trump said he'd been lobbied about the issue even as a presidential candidate.

A senior North Korean official may be in attendance at an global conference set for June 14 and 15 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and the Japanese Foreign Ministry is planning to dispatch a high-ranking official of its own to try and make contact.

Yet, there was no mention of Washington's key demands, namely the Complete, Verifiable, and Irreversible Disarmament (CVID) of North Korea's nuclear infrastructure. The North Koreans, like their counterparts, the Palestinians and Iranians, are not necessarily bound by their given word.

That was sure to rattle close allies South Korea and Japan.

Trump, reiterating his trust of Kim, said: "I do trust him, yeah".

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, who was present at the summit on Tuesday, had called for the "Libya model" when negotiating denuclearisation with North Korea.
