Facebook launching dating feature

Former speechwriter Katherine Losse said Zuckerberg began using the language of states to talk about Facebook's burgeoning power

In a letter [PDF] sent on Tuesday to the head of public policy for Facebook's United Kingdom office, Rebecca Stimson, the head of a key Parliamentary committee, Damian Collins, threatened to issue a formal summons against Zuckerberg if he doesn't agree to attend one of its sessions digging into fake news and privacy.

"I can't believe we're only four months in", Zuckerberg said in jest. "I can't believe we are only four months in".

Ahead of the announcement at the conference, Mark Zuckerberg wrote about Clear History on his own Facebook page. There are 200 million people who have marked themselves as single on Facebook, he said.

Facebook's comments to Wired appear as the social network hosts its F8 developer conference, in San Jose, California.

Taking on a more somber and forceful tone than in previous years, Zuckerberg on Tuesday tried to bolster Facebook's commitment to privacy and building community.

The tool will let people build separate profiles just for dating using their first names only. "Your friends aren't going to see this".

Match fell 22 percent - its largest one-day drop ever - and IAC, which owns more than a fifth of Match, fell almost 18 percent in its biggest daily loss in about 13 years.

Relationships have always been part of Facebook, dating back to the infamous "relationship status" feature.

The dating service is being built with privacy in mind, so that friends will not be able to see a person's dating profile, Mr Zuckerberg said.

Instagram is getting a few updates as well.

Facebook brings to the dating table a treasure trove of data on its active users, which are over 2 billion strong.

In real terms, the summons would not result in the CEO being arrested or forcibly taken to Parliament nor the Tower of London - those days are long gone - but it is a bad idea to infuriate lawmakers in a country where you do a lot of business and have employees and offices.

"This has been an intense year", Zuckerberg quipped.

Another new feature is "Groups Tab", which is rolling out today. He emphasized the investments Facebook has made to stop the sharing of fake information on its website, such as artificial intelligence tools and 20,000 human moderators to flag and block fake news content and its disseminators.

Facebook wants to help people find love on its platform. But Facebook said this is not the case.

Companies that use Messenger to talk to customers can now add augmented reality effects to their chats.

The social network has already moved to limit the amount of data it shares with third-party applications and plans further steps to prevent a repeat of the Cambridge Analytica debacle, Zuckerberg said. Zuckerberg announced Tuesday that app reviews were open again.

The Facebook CEO, who sported a blue long-sleeved shirt and dark trousers, appeared more relaxed addressing app developers than Congress in suit and tie, energetically skipping from one product announcement to the next, while cracking jokes and grinning at shout-outs.

Facebook joins internet giants Amazon, Microsoft and Google in offering artificial-intelligence based translation features - most prominently Google's Pixel ear buds which promise real-time translation across dozens of languages.

"Our goal here isn't to be hard", said Archibong. "If we don't work on this, the world isn't moving in this direction by itself", he said. The Oculus Go, a $199 stand-alone headset, is now available for sale.
