Syria strikes send 'clear message' on chemical weapons: British PM

May ready to bypass Parliament & approve UK military intervention in Syria – BBC

President Trump declared "mission accomplished" Saturday after US military forces carried out missile strikes with Britain and France against Syrian chemical-weapons facilities.

The Syrian government and Russian Federation called this information untrue, while the United States and allies have blamed Bashar al-Assad for the attack.

Former British general and military expert Jonathan Shaw was abruptly cut off by a Sky News host after he cast doubt on the veracity of an alleged chemical weapons attack in the Syrian city of Douma.

Syria said the US, French, and British strikes were an attempt to "hinder the mission's work".

State TV broadcast live from the square where a large crowd of civilians mixed with men in uniforms, including an actor, lawmakers and other figures.

When did it take place?

Earlier this week, Trump called the chemical attack in Douma "atrocious" and vowed that those responsible would "pay a price".

Defense Secretary Mattis called last night's attacks precise and says they were confined to chemical weapons-type targets, as he called them.

Donald Trump cancels South America trip because of Syria crisis
United States defence secretary Jim Mattis earlier raised the possibility of military action if Syria is found to be responsible. The US president and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron agreed in a phone call that chemical weapons had been used in Douma.

She said nearly a century of global acceptance about not using chemical weapons had been eroded in Douma and Salisbury.

"The United States and its allies have no proof and, without even waiting for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to take a position, have carried out this military attack", said the foreign ministry in a statement. Draped in government flags and blaring patriotic tunes, dozens of Syrians arrived on bicycles, on foot and in cars spray painted with the red, white, and black colours of the Syrian flag.

Friday's strikes appear to signal Trump's willingness to draw the United States more deeply into the Syrian conflict. "It was a successful mission", White said.

"We've attacked the heart of the Syrians' chemical weapons program".

Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly told reporters the military action targeted the "main research centre" for Syria's chemical weapons programme and "two important production sites". Macron's office said he spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin expressing concern about the deterioration of the situation in Syria and calling for more dialogue with Moscow. Syria's President Bashar Assad announced that his country would respond, while Russia's ambassador to Washington warned of unspecified "consequences".

Many world leaders said the airstrikes were "necessary and appropriate." .

Douma and the rest of eastern Ghouta had been a significant rebel stronghold throughout Syria's civil war and its surrender came after years of siege by Assad's troops and a months-long military offensive. Russia's US embassy released a statement warning that the airstrikes will "not be left without consequences".

In response to the threats, Assad said Thursday that a potential retaliation would be based on "lies" and would seek to undermine his forces' recent advances near Damascus.
