'You are the product': Apple's cofounder Steve Wozniak is quitting Facebook

Apple Steve Wozniak DeleteFacebook

Wozniak told USA Today that he would be willing to pay for the service that Facebook provides, rather than allow a free service to make money at his expense.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he isn't sure Facebook can fix its privacy issues and he expects it will be decades before it changes its policies.

Zuckerberg, who is set to testify in front of Congress this week about the scandal, pushed back in an interview with the website Vox. "Apple has more safe methods to share stuffs about users". Count Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak as one of those people.

Wozniak said he didn't mind saying goodbye to his 5,000 Facebook friends.

Wozniak also compared Facebook's money-making tactics to that of Apple.

"If our customer was our product, we could make a ton of money", he said, echoing late Apple CEO Steve Job's stance on privacy. Cambridge, a political consulting, firm apparently misused users' data, USA Today said. To this Cook said, "I wouldn't be in the situation". Facebook has never charged for access to its service.

Several other high-profile users have removed themselves from the network completely, joining the #DeleteFacebook movement, including US technology entrepreneur Elon Musk's accounts for his firms Tesla and Space X, singer Cher and actor Will Ferrell.

Earlier, another Silicon Valley leader, Elon Musk, deleted the Facebook pages of two of his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.

For tech-savvy users, the Cambridge Analytica scandal simply encapsulates what privacy activists have been warning about for years.

Numerous celebrities also have joined the #DeleteFacebook exodus, including Cher, Will Ferrell, Rosie O'Donnell and Jim Carrey. While it's possible to leave Facebook without retiring from Messenger, there's always the risk that Facebook will keep on collecting data on its users.

Cook was asked about Facebook chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg and Cambridge Analytica, the British firm that was hired by then-presidential candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. In an update last week, Facebook estimated as many as 87 million people, mostly in the United States, may have had their data improperly shared.
