Gaza protesters torch tires along border, draw Israeli fire

Palestinian journalist dies from gunshot wounds

A Palestinian journalist has succumbed to his wounds and died today after being shot in the stomach by an Israeli sniper on Friday.

Beleaguered by years of rocket attacks from next-door Gaza, residents of the frontline Israeli village of Nahal Oz seemed unmoved on Sunday by Palestinian mass demonstrations at the border and Israel's deadly response to them.

There were discrepancies in Palestinian reports on the Gaza death toll from those clashes.

Yasser Murtaja reportedly died from a gunshot wound he sustained while filming Friday in an area engulfed in thick black smoke from protesters setting tires on fire.

The General Secretary of Reporters Without Borders, Christophe Deloire, posted a Tweet that said Murtaja was deliberately shot although he was wearing a vest that indicated he was a journalist.

"(Israeli Defense Forces) troops are operating in accordance with clear rules of engagement that are tailored to this scenario.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian representative in Washington warned Friday that the situation in Gaza was explosive and that the region can not afford to wait for the promised new U.S. peace plan.

Hundreds of Palestinians took half in a mass protest alongside Gaza's unstable border with Israel, the second large-scale demonstration in what is predicted to be a gentle turnout over the approaching weeks.

Gaza health ministry officials say 22 Palestinians have been killed over the past week, including 16 people involved in last Friday's protests.

"There are no innocent people in the Gaza Strip", Lieberman told Israel's public radio.

There were indications that Israel used "excessive force" against protesters last week. "The IDF does not intentionally target journalists".

Gaza's economy has been devastated by years of Israeli military attacks and a joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

The syndicate published photos of journalist Khalil Abu Athira who was also shot at during his coverage of Gaza's protest on Friday. "The result was foreseeable deaths and injuries of demonstrators on the other side of a border who posed no imminent threat to life", he said.

Palestinian men burn tires during a protest in the West Bank city of Ramallah, April 6, 2018.

The protesters gathered Saturday outside of British prime minister's residence on Downing Street and also voiced their anger at UK's silence versus the abuses being inflicted on Palestinians by the Israeli forces as the country's Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn slammed Western inaction over the regime's killing of over 30 Palestinians during anti-occupation protests in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Yariv Oppenheimer, a member of Peace Now, a non-government organisation in Israel, lamented the deaths and urged the Israeli army to exercise restraint.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, about 491 people were injured during the protests.

However worldwide organizations just like the World Financial institution and United Nations say the blockade continues to stifle the economic system.
