Calais violence: France tightens border security after migrants are shot

27 2017 migrants gather during a food distribution in Grande Scynthe near Calais northern France one week after French authorities evacuated hundreds of migrants from a wood on the northern coast

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb on Friday pledged to send more security forces to northern port city of Calais after violent migrant fightings left many wounded.

Four teenage refugees are in critical condition and more than a dozen others injured after violence broke out in Calais amid an increasingly desperate situation that has seen smuggling gangs, according to one charity, "pitting communities against each other".

Police are searching for a 37-year-old Afghan suspected of being involved in the shootings.

The latest figures from the Agence France-Presse show that 22 people were hospitalised, with four Eritreans aged 16-18 reported to be suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

"We have reached a level of violence unbearable for Calais residents and migrants", he said. He warned that there was likely to be further bloodshed.

Collomb blamed the tensions in Calais on smugglers who reportedly charge as much as 2,500 euros ($3,100) to sneak migrants onto trucks crossing the Channel by ferry or through the Eurotunnel.

The shootout came at a time of rising tensions over the situation in Calais, a symbol of France's struggle to manage Europe's ongoing migrant crisis.

However, humanitarian organizations say Europe's convoluted asylum process makes it almost impossible for people to get the help they need.

Asked about the grim conditions in the area of what was the Calais Jungle, the minister said that "those who want to stay here illegally - it's not possible", according to Le Monde.

"We stopped everything, the police came quickly, and everyone got scattered amid tear gas", said Fran├žois Guennoc of the Migrants' Hostel charity, describing how more than 100 migrants from Africa, armed with iron rods and sticks, had tried to beat a group of 20 Afghans during a food distribution.

Beyond pouring millions into more police and extra security measures in Calais, Mr Macron said he wanted to reduce the amount of time migrants spent in France.

Collomb appealed to migrants to stay away from Calais, saying the government would not allow them to settle there.

It is not yet clear who fired the bullets.

Police tackling the riots using batons and teargas as they worked to restore order in Calais.

"They mistakenly thought that they could reach Britain more easily", Mr. Guennoc said.
