Equal pay: Accountancy firm finds no gender bias with salaries at BBC

BBC Cuts Pay of Male Journalists After 'Pay Gap' Outcry

The BBC plans to close the gender pay gap among its presenters and have women in half of its on-air roles by 2020, after a pay review found a 6.8% pay gap.

A study of pay at the BBC has found "no evidence of gender bias" in determining employee salaries but says that disparities in the pay of men and women at the organisation should be addressed.

Under the BBC's new pay structure, staff will not be able to learn the exact salary of colleagues but will find out how their pay compares to those who hold the same job.

The study was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers at the behest of the BBC, and looked at correspondents, presenters and on-air editors in news and news-related areas.

On air, there will be substantial pay cuts for some men, and pay rises for some men and women. The BBC said that an independent audit into equal pay would be published next week.

"The BBC believes in equality".

"In 2014 I was offered a contract to present a flagship arts programme", read one story from an unnamed BBC radio presenter. "That is why we need to be and want to be an exemplar on gender pay, and equal pay", Hall said.

Ahead of today's report a group of 170 women working at the BBC submitted evidence to a parliamentary Digital Culture, Media and Sport committee looking into issues around pay and equality.

The Metro runs with the headline: "The "Farce" & The Furious", and says women at the corporation reacted with "anger and disbelief" at the report.

There is frustration at senior levels of the that other organisations who are obliged to publish their own gender pay gap seem to be dragging their heels. "The only mention of equal pay in the letter of engagement with PwC refers to an "assessment of equal pay risks".

The report said there was a "lack of clarity and openness about the basis for pay decisions" at the broadcaster, and made a number of sweeping recommendations.

Humprhys is one of six high-profile male broadcasters at the BBC who have since agreed to take a pay cut, as the BBC prepares to introduce a five-point plan created to balance the wage structure. The NUJ's evidence to the committee quotes Samira Ahmed, the BBC Radio 4 arts presenter, describing the feeling of being paid much less for the same work for years "as though bosses had naked pictures of you in their office and laughed every time they saw you".

BBC Women has submitted written evidence on 14 such cases to lawmakers. Years later, the presenter got a 5% pay rise. "I am told that we are now being paid at the same rate per day, but there is no transparency".

Two weeks ago, one of the BBC's most senior global journalists, Carrie Gracie, resigned from her position in protest of pay inequality at the network. The group has accused public chain managers of hiding widespread gender discrimination that exists in broadcaster and has sent ir grievances to British parliament's media committee, which investigates wage gap in main news network of United United, and that will examine matter this Wednesday.

Former chairman Lord Grade, told the the pay issue was a "huge problem for management" that would not be solved overnight. "That's why the BBC will act to put right the shortcomings of the past and accept that we have got some presenters' pay wrong".

"If you look at the grievances that Carrie Gracie brought forward, saying she wasn't paid the same amount as other worldwide editors at the, this new proposed pay cap wouldn't have addressed that at all".
