Media 'least-trusted' institution in global attitudes survey

An overwhelming majority of the public believe social media companies do not do enough to tackle bullying illegal activities and the spreading of extremist content on their sites a survey has found

The Edelman survey showed a deeper lack of trust in USA institutions among the "informed public" or people who are college educated, earn above-average incomes and consume news regularly. Of 28 countries surveyed, 20 lie in "distruster territory", one more than in 2017.

Globally, almost seven in 10 respondents among the general population worry about fake news or false information being used as a weapon, and 59 percent say that it is getting harder to tell if a piece of news was produced by a respected media organization.

For the first time media is the least trusted institution globally.

More than half of Britons worry about fake news, Edelman said, while 64% said they could not distinguish between proper journalism and fake news. Coming ahead of the World Economic Forum annual summit the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer said, globally, people's trust in these four areas remained largely unchanged from a year ago.

Almost seven in 10 respondents said they anxious about fake news or false information being used as a weapon - with almost 60 percent saying it was getting harder to tell whether news was produced by a respected news organisation. Among the "informed public" - those aged 25-64 who are college-educated, at the upper end of the income distribution and report significant media consumption - it plunged 23 points to 45.

The match did not even start well for the Russian as she lost the first game of the match and Kerber dominated ever since. Chung's feat also makes him only the third South Korean player - man or woman - to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam.

Facebook Will Now Ask Users for Input on Trustworthiness of News Sources
Facebook has been struggling with how to handle its distribution of news in an era of fake news and claims of media bias. The new scoring system is only rolling out in the U.S.to start, but the company plans to eventually expand it globally.

Its survey of 33,000 people "reveals a world of seemingly stagnant distrust" in institutions including government and media, according to the authors.

Trust in business, media and nongovernmental organizations also fell between 10 and 20 points, according to the survey.

"The United States is enduring an unprecedented crisis of trust", said Richard Edelman, Edelman's president and CEO. "The root cause of this fall is the lack of objective facts and rational discourse", he said.

Some of the starkest differences have emerged in the United Kingdom, where the survey finds that social media companies have lost the trust of most of the public. Sixty-three percent of respondents say they do not know how to tell good journalism from rumor or falsehoods or if a piece of news was produced by a respected media organization. This is based on views of respondents about global companies headquartered in specific countries and how much these firms are trusted by them 'to do what is right'. Media can not do it alone because of political and financial constraints.

The survey further noted that companies headquartered in Canada, Switzerland, Sweden and Australia are most trusted. Edelman was awarded the Grand Prix Cannes Lion for PR in 2014; six Cannes Lions in 2015; and the Grand Prix in the Titanium category in 2016. In 2015, Edelman was among Glassdoor's "Best Places to Work" for the fourth time.
