Facebook Will Now Ask Users for Input on Trustworthiness of News Sources

Facebook says it will survey readers to determine the credibility of publishers

"This data will help to inform ranking in News Feed", he wrote.

The changes that Facebook wanted to implement on its News Feeds is to basically separate posts from publications and posts from friends or family.

Zuckerberg said the company will prioritize news from "trusted sources" and it will determine which outlets qualify by asking people in its ongoing surveys whether they're familiar with a news source, and if so, whether they trust that source.

The chief executive outlined the shakeup in a post on Facebook, saying that starting next week the News Feed, the company's centerpiece product, would prioritize "high quality news" over less trusted sources.

"There's too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarization in the world today", he wrote. The new scoring system is only rolling out in the U.S.to start, but the company plans to eventually expand it globally. Zuckerberg acknowledged that having Facebook itself or a third-party consultant to determine the publishers will introduce a layer of subjectivity.

However, based on the results of recent tests that Facebook is conducting, these changes are causing much bigger problems such as helping boost the presence of Fake News, the New York Times reports. It also said it would put an emphasis on local news sources.

Facebook is rolling out a major change to its News Feed: pushing up news articles that come from "high quality" sources, and pushing down the others.

Facebook wants its users to decide which media outlets they trust most.

The new trust rankings will emerge from surveys the company is now conducting.

Letting Facebook users essentially decide which news outlets are reliable enough to be worthy of "distribution" on the site is a seriously risky endeavor. After some difficulty, Zuckerberg and Facebook made a decision to let users rank news source trustworthiness.

Facebook has been struggling with how to handle its distribution of news in an era of fake news and claims of media bias. Is this latest change to let users rank news source trustworthiness a good approach?
