FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: New Year's Eve bitter cold expected

Temperatures are struggling to warm across the ArkLaTex.

Next week looks to be very cold, although I am not going as extreme as some of the computer models are suggesting just yet. Highs will range from the 40s southwest to upper 30s closer to Rolla.

Tonight will be partly cloudy and cold. Once again, the GFS has been the wetter solution, while the European has been drier, but it still shows some moisture in place.

Ice could make travel dangerous on New Year's weekend

The clouds may begin to slowly clear overnight, but no significant clearing is expected until during the day on Friday. There should be a fair amount of sunshine to go around.

Still expecting to see some sun tomorrow afternoon and temperatures to make it to the mid 40s. That will create conditions favorable for frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes for New Year's Eve night. The GFS has been consistently painting a picture of a wintry mix across the Southeast for Sunday and Monday and continues to show a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow across much of the northern half of Alabama. The rains will be very light, and only minor accumulation of ice is possible on bridges and overpasses. Saturday will see temperatures climb into the mid to upper 40's with drizzle through the day, which will stay as rain as temperatures are well above freezing. How cold we will get remains to be seen, but expect morning lows in the teens and low-20s through Thursday, with highs only in the 30s. Pets, plants AND pipes will need to be protected as temperatures are expected to drop into the low to mid 20s over all areas Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings.

Even with extremely cold weather on Sunday through Tuesday, Sanchez predicted a mild winter overall.
