Univ. of OR graduate students join National Walkout

Harvard graduate student Jack Nicoludis, who helped organize a campus protest on Wednesday says the House tax bill would more than double his taxes.

Sen. Toomey's Pittsburgh office is located in the Station Square neighborhood. "We make about $25,000, and I'm estimating the tax would be around $10,000 or 12,000". Technically, our university reimburses us for our tuition in the form of a tuition waiver, as well as paying us a stipend in return for the work that we do as teacher's assistants, research assistants and related work. In fact, the House plan with tuition waivers or the Senate plan, which has tuition waivers built in, reduced taxes across the board as compared to historical tax structures. The tax bill now before the Congress wages war on research institutions and underpaid graduate students.

Dana Cloud, a professor in SU's communication and rhetorical studies department and a member of the International Socialist Organization, said she fully supports Syracuse Graduate Employees United's decision to unionize. The language in the House tax bill dictates that these tuition waivers would be taxable, counting the assistance as income.

Those forced to take out student loans to cover higher tax bills would suffer a double whammy if another change in the House bill also made it into law.

Taken together, these provisions are a clear attack on USA colleges and universities and their students.

How do you think this could affect future students' choices to enter graduate school?

"Increasing taxes on graduate students will drive talented people away from higher education, undermine groundbreaking research and impose excessive and unnecessary financial hardship on our graduate students".

We appreciate the desire to simplify and strengthen the nation's tax code, and we also recognize that our legislators have many competing interests to balance.

More than anything else, that's what elected President Donald Trump, and the GOP had better hope and pray his program instigates more widely distributed opportunities in the course of boosting growth from 2 percent to 3 percent or that improvement won't save the party from major setbacks in the upcoming midterm and 2020 elections.

The House has already passed its version.

"It could well make the difference between making college possible and making it unaffordable", Chodzko-Zajko said.

While most of these highly concerning provisions have not been included in the Senate version of the bill, they could be in the final bill submitted to the President for signature.

All five Republican congressmen from Louisiana voted in favor of the bill, including Rep. Garret Graves.

Many aspects of the bill would make higher education more expensive for families, even as colleges and universities are looking for ways to broaden access to education - one of the key ways for individuals to achieve economic independence. She said the extra cost would force many of her peers to drop out, and younger students to shun higher education, plugging the workforce pipeline. "As the Senate prepares for an anticipated vote by the end of the week, Duquesne will continue to make its voice heard in favor of responsible legislation that preserves accessibility and affordability for our students".

Graduate students and faculty members gathered at Founders Plaza on North Campus Wednesday to show their opposition to a tax bill passed earlier this month by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. However, it is now not part of the bill under consideration in the U.S. Senate.

Sen. Casey expressed his opposition in an email to The Duke via his press secretary. He said the bill is meant to "pay for tax cuts, or rather a redistribution of wealth, to the wealthiest parts of the population".

Gary S. May, chancellor of UC Davis, offered his "wholehearted support" for the #GradTaxWalkout action, writing at the Sacramento Bee, "The House bill is an attack on higher education in the name of reform".

"The tax increase that is going to land on me is not going to health care, not going to education".
