Why should Aadhaar be linked to mobile phones, SC asks Centre

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

However, the Aadhaar-mobile issue is not part of the state government's plea, senior advocate and Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee said.

When Sibal - a veteran of many legal battles - appeared as an intervenor for West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the government, Justice Sikri, raised an objection, saying: "This is a matter of the State of West Bengal".

"In a federal structure, how can a state file plea challenging Parliament's mandate", the Supreme Court bench said.

The court said this after Attorney General K.K. Venugopal told the bench that the Centre had filed a detailed affidavit refuting all the allegations on expanding the area under Aadhaar linkage.

The validity of Aadhaar law has been challenged by a batch of petitioners, including former Karnataka High Court Judge K.S. Puttaswamy, Magsaysay awardee Shanta Sinha, and feminist researcher Kalyani Sen Menon.

Among the big names scheduled to report earnings this week are American Express, Verizon Communications and General Electric. Abbott rose 1.63 percent after the company's profit beat estimates, driven by strong sales in its medical devices business.

We know it is a matter which needs consideration but you satisfy us how state can challenge it: SC to West Bengal.

On October 25, the Centre had informed the Supreme Court that the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar for availing benefits of social welfare schemes has been extended to March 31 next year.

The Mamata Banerjee government has terminated licences of three diagnostic centres of North 24 Parganas, one of the worst dengue-affected districts in West Bengal.

The plea is listed for hearing before a bench comprising Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan today.

The court meanwhile issued notice on petitions filed by advocate Raghav Tankha seeking a direction to the Department of Telecom and to mobile service providers to cease from misinforming the public that Aadhaar is the sole means for identity and address proof for e-KYC procedure for mobile phone users. The court, however, asked the West Bengal counsel to amend its prayer and submit a fresh plea. They challenge several aspects of Aadhaar and the use and sharing of data collected under the programme. Modi government passed a mandate on Aadhaar card making it mandatory for receiving the benefits of various social welfare schemes.
