OJ Simpson freed from jail after spending nine years behind bars

OJ Simpson to eat steak, get iPhone after expected release from prison next week

According to a Nevada prison official, former National Football League (NFL) star and film actor, O.J. Simpson has been released after a nine-year sentence for armed robbery.

Simpson, now 70, spent 8½ years behind bars for a 2007 armed confrontation with two sports memorabilia traders in a Las Vegas hotel room.

He is out on parole, with supervision for another five years.

A lawyer representing Ron Goldman's family told Associated Press this amount had almost doubled with interest under Californian state law, and that the family would continue to seek payment from Simpson after his release.

"We needed to do this to ensure public safety and to avoid any possible incident", she told CBS News by telephone.

Scotto didn't respond to messages seeking comment.

"All I've done is try to be helpful... and that's the life I've tried to live because I want to get back to my kids and family".

During his highly publicized parole hearing, the four Nevada parole board commissioners present unanimously voted for his early release, citing the support Simpson had from his family and his disciplinary-free record while in prison, where he also took anti-violence classes.

Ms Keast said the dead-of-night release from the prison about 145 kilometres east of Reno, Nevada, was conducted to avoid media attention.

The official Facebook page of the Nevada Department of Corrections posted a short video of Simpson's release in the early Sunday morning darkness.

The request is now in the hands of Department of Corrections Secretary Julie L. Jones.

Keast says she did not have any information about where Simpson was headed.

Simpson will reportedly be living in Las Vegas and eventually will move to Florida to be closer to his children.

He was found civilly liable for the slayings in 1997 and ordered to pay the victims' families $US33.5 million.

OJ Simpson is a free man.

It seems like a belated effort by Florida to put the wheels in motion to keep Simpson out of the state, given that he becomes eligible for release as of Sunday.
