Federation Internationale de Football Association set to relax ban on war dead commemorations at games

Poppy ban Wayne Rooney

The annual stand-off between Fifa and the Home Nations' football teams about wearing poppies is set to end, as the world's governing body considers allowing a change to its current rules.

A ban on players displaying poppies is reportedly expected to be lifted by the International Football Association Board before international games in November.

The row drew criticism from UK Prime Minister Theresa May, who called Fifa's stance "utterly outrageous".

Northern Ireland commemorated Armistice Day with black armbands when they played Azerbaijan, while Wales did not opt for a visible commemoration by their team, but were fined as fans wore poppies in the stands, while a card mosaic was raised before their match against Serbia. "I think it is absolutely right that they should be able to do so".

According to British broadcaster BBC, the use of the poppy emblem would be permitted if the opposing teams and the competition organizer for the match in question both accept its use in advance.

England are due to play Germany in a friendly at London's Wembley stadium during that time and it is has been reported that the German FA have no difficulties with the wearing of poppies.

England captain Wayne Rooney wears a poppy on his sleeve.

The International Football Association Board has reportedly made a decision to lift a ban on international players displaying poppies.

The English and Scottish FAs appealed against fines totalling £51,000 for displaying the poppy when the sides faced each other.

Wales, England and Scotland were fined by Federation Internationale de Football Association for displaying poppy emblems at matches, with England being fined £35,000 and Scotland £15,000.

Iran has been fined for "religiously motivated displays" during a match.

The report goes on to claim that the IFAB, football's lawmakers, are expected to rubber-stamp the change next month.

The change to the Federation Internationale de Football Association regulations should allow England to wear poppies without fear of being sanctioned this November.

It is believed the fines levied against the United Kingdom associations a year ago will not now need to be paid.
