Trump adviser says military option not preferred for NKorea

Donald Trump briefed on North Korea missile launch: White House

President Donald Trump will take his "America First" message to the United Nations next week and seek support for tough measures against North Korea despite his skepticism about the value of worldwide groups like the 193-member body. North Korea has launched dozens of missiles under Kim Jong Un's leadership to accelerate a weapons programme created to give it the ability to target the United States with a powerful, nuclear-tipped missile.

North Korea on Friday fired a missile which flew over Japan, but resulted in Japanese citizens being told to take cover.

Earlier this week, the UN Security Council agreed to tighten sanctions on North Korea, banning its textile exports and capping fuel supplies.

Haley repeatedly said the latest package of North Korea sanctions unanimously passed by the Security Council is significant, calling it a "massive sanctions package".

Those options are "not only effective but overwhelming", Trump added for his part, after reviewing a military base near Washington.

Google appeals against 2.4-billion euro fine in European Union court

"We have strangled their economic situation", she said. "So, having said that, I have no problem with kicking it to [Defense Secretary James] Mattis because I think he has plenty of options". "Now it is not what we would prefer to do".

McMaster encouraged the rigorous enforcement of the global sanctions, adopted Monday, in an effort to exhaust all efforts to confront "this global problem short of war".

In a statement, the Security Council said the launch was carried out just three weeks after a first missile overflew Japan and less than two weeks after Pyongyang's sixth and biggest nuclear test.

"We're out of time", McMaster said.

The increasing levels of sanctions are expected to cut off 90 percent of North Korea's trade.
