Utah nurse arrested for refusing to give patient's blood to police

WATCH: Utah Nurse Alex Wubbels Dragged Into Police Car For Protecting Patient

A nurse claims she was assaulted by a Salt Lake City police officer when she refused to draw blood from an unconscious patient.

New body camera video has been released of the controversial arrest of a nurse for not allowing police to draw blood from a patient.

"I was alarmed by what I saw in the video with our officer and Ms. Wubbels", said Brown. Medics sedated the truck driver, who was severely burned, and took him to the University of Utah Hospital. The fleeing motorist died in the collision. "Stop! Stop! I did nothing wrong!" as Payne drags her to a patrol vehicle and with two onlooking law enforcement officers.

Wubbles alleged Payne could not take no for an answer and consequently misbehaved with her.

"No, we're done, you're under arrest", he said, as he pull the nurse's arm behind her back.

The video shows Wubbels calmly explaining the hospital's policy to Payne, while he gets increasingly impatient and threatening towards her.

Ms Wubbels' lawyer told the paper she had not filed a lawsuit, but that following discussions with Salt Lake City police, she believed the department would now educate its officers.

He is seen pulling her arms behind her and places handcuffs around her wrists before yanking her to the back of the patrol vehicle.

Opinions divided on Sharapova as Slam return looms
To me, she's made some really good strides, although she is still a little mechanical at times. "If not, no, we will see". The day before beating Cilic in the Wimbledon final, Federer sat down with Luthi to discuss preparation for the U.S.

Sgt. Brandon shearer, with the Salt Lake City Police, said, "It was alarming".

"A blood draw, it just gets thrown around like it's some simple thing", she said, according to the Deseret News.

Officers have been briefed about the law for drawing blood and on policy, training and actions, she added.

"I can't sit on this video and not attempt to speak out both to re-educate and inform", she said. Vials of his blood were needed as part of the investigation to determine whether the patient had illicit substances in his system at the time of the crash, according to a written report obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune.

But, the nurse turned down the request stating hospital policies that bar anyone taking blood from an unconscious patient without his/her consent, unless there is a warrant allowing the draw or the patient is under arrest.

"The law is well-established". I want to see people do the right thing first and I want to see this be a civil discourse. "The only job I have as a nurse is to keep my patients safe". "I don't know what was driving this situation". "If that's not something that's going to happen and there is refusal to acknowledge the need for growth and the need for re-education, then we will likely be forced to take that type of step".

Wubbels, who competed in alpine skiing in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics, was asked what she thought should happen to Payne. She said she hopes the videos will start a dialogue to help make those changes take place.
