Sanctions on North Korea 'Misguided and Futile', Russia Says

North Korea launches missile over Japan

Putin penned a statement published on the Kremlin's website on Friday, ahead of a summit of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) nations in China next week. "It is essential to resolve the region's problems through direct dialogue involving all sides without advancing any preconditions (for such talks)".

The Russian president said that focusing exclusively on pressuring North Korea to give up its missile program is "misguided and futile". Provocations, pressure and militarist and insulting rhetoric are a dead-end road, ' Putin underlined.

He said Russian Federation and China 'have created a roadmap for a settlement on the Korean Peninsula that is designed to promote the gradual easing of tensions and the creation of a mechanism for lasting peace and security'.

Madrid also noted that the North Korean Embassy had already been warned that continuing with such activities would bring consequences for bilateral relations.

"Our government's stance that we need to peacefully resolve North Korean nuclear issues and Korean Peninsula issues remains unchanged", Lee Eugene, South Korean Unification Ministry deputy spokesperson, said.

The UN Security Council denounced North Korea's latest missile test, unanimously demanding that Pyongyang halt the programme.

Nuclear-armed North Korea on Tuesday fired a ballistic missile over Japan into the Pacific, escalating tensions over its atomic programme which have led to bellicose exchanges between Washington and Pyongyang.

This year alone, North Korea has launched at least 13 missiles and some analysts believe it could have viable long-range nuclear missiles before the end of Trump's first term in early 2021.

"We have a common goal - denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, so that neither the North nor the South, the United States and us [Russia] have nuclear weapons", Lavrov said. The US, UK and other Western allies are prone to impose new heavy sanctions on Pyongyang even outside the UN Security Council.
