Iran Parliament ratifies motion to counter US' 'terrorist' acts

Iran Allocates $520Mln for Missile Program in Response to New US Sanctions - AFP

The vote comes amid growing tensions with the U.S. over the Iranian nuclear deal, which President Trump has said he would like to see cancelled. After the result was announced, lawmakers shouted: "Death to America".

Iran's parliament voted on August 13 to allocate $520 million to develop its missile programme to fight Washington's "adventurism" and sanctions, and to boost the foreign operations of the country's Revolutionary Guards.

In a session Sunday, 240 lawmakers voted for the bill, with only one abstention, to confront "America's terrorist and adventurous actions" in the region.

The measure would also allocate over $260 million each to Iran's ballistic missile program and the Quds Force - the external arm of the IRGC, which has sent military advisers to Iraq and Syria to fight terrorists.

The Iranian parliament voted Sunday for allocating $520 million on the development of its own missile program in response to USA sanctions, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the bill passed on Sunday had the support of the government.

Washington's new sanctions violate a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran both "in letter and spirit".

Mr Trump has recently backed away from his key campaign promise to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

He praised the bill, saying it "was designed wisely so that it does not violate the (nuclear deal) and provide excuses for opposing sides".

The motion was designed in view of continued bellicose policies of the USA towards Iran, and its persisting measures aimed at endangering peace and security in the region, it said.

The United States has had no diplomatic ties with the Iran since 1980, and Trump has halted the direct contacts initiated by his predecessor Barack Obama.

As well, the bill allocates a budget of about $5 billion to what is termed as "reinforcing the country's defensive power, improving deterrent its power, countering terrorism, increasing Iran's diplomatic leverage and intelligence capabilities, safeguarding the regional stability, supporting the IRGC, development of nuclear propellers and boosting Iran's defensive capabilities against possible nuclear attacks". A string of close encounters between U.S. ships and Iranian vessels in the Gulf in recent months has added to the tensions between the two countries.
