Cuba: Canadian diplomat struck by headaches and hearing loss

US Officials in Cuba Suffer Mystery Illness, Igniting Fresh Diplomatic Storm

The US has announced that it expelled two Cuban diplomats in May after Americans working at the US Embassy in Havana suffered "unexplained physical ailments".

"We don't have any definitive information about the source or the cause", she said.

The United States have expelled two Cuban diplomats as federal investigators look into unusual illnesses involving USA diplomats in Havana.

State Department officials told CNN that one American employee in Havana may have permanent hearing loss from the alleged attacks in 2016.

According to the Canadian national broadcaster, the government is working with Cuban authorities to determine what happened.

Nauert told reporters that while the "incident" appears to have only affected State Department employees and not private USA citizens in Cuba, "we don't have any definitive answers about the source or the cause of what we consider to be incidents".

The symptoms ultimately led to the officials leaving Cuba, but the State Department would not specify what the physical symptoms were or when the Cuban officials left the US.

However, The Washington Post reports that us officials believe Cuba used "a covert sonic weapon that left the victims with severe hearing loss".

The rapprochement, which had been mediated by Barack Obama and his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro, has already been troubled by Donald Trump's moves to tighten travel restrictions and trade embargoes against Cuba.

The State Department asked the Cubans to leave their embassy in the USA on May 23, but CBS first reported the information this week.

Meanwhile, on Fox News Channel's Special Report, Anchor Bret Baier delivered a news brief on the developing story. Officials cautioned the AP that Cuba may have been unaware the attacks were happening, and that a third country like Russian Federation may have been responsible.

In late 2016 a number of US diplomats at the Havana embassy experienced unexplained and severe loss of hearing. "We take those incidents very seriously and there is an investigation now underway". CNN quotes an unnamed official who stated, "We have worked with the Cubans to try and find out what is going on". The statement also said it had launched an "exhaustive, high-priority, urgent investigation at the behest of the highest level of the Cuban government".

"Cuba has never, nor would it ever, allow that the Cuban territory be used for any action against accredited diplomatic agents or their families", said the statement.

The US first learned of the issues at the embassy in late 2016, she said.

President Trump has criticized the reopening of diplomatic relations with Cuba, calling it "a completely one-sided deal".
