U.S. stocks veer higher in morning trading; oil heads lower

Dow Jones Industrial Average

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 33 points, or 0.15%, at 22,085, snapping a 9-day streak of closing records.

The broad-based Stoxx Europe 600 stock index dropped 0.5 percent in early trading, with key indices, such as Britain's FTSE 100, Germany's DAX and France's CAC all down 0.5 percent or more.

USA stocks opened lower on Wednesday as investors flocked to safe-haven assets amid escalating tensions between North Korea and the United States.

After a dip of as much as 0.52 percent earlier in the day, Wall Street's three major indexes bounced off intraday lows.

Trading volume also picked up in the late afternoon of what had been a sleepy summer session while the U.S. Congress is expected to be in recess until Sept 5.

In the political sphere, investors will be keeping a close eye on the rising tensions between North Korea and the US on Wednesday.

Officials in North Korea said they were "carefully examining" a strike on Guam, which is home to around 163,000 people and two USA military installations and threatened a further "all-out war wiping out all the strongholds of enemies, including the US mainland" in a government statement.

Office Depot tumbled 22.4 percent after the office supplies retailer's quarterly results came in below estimates. Japan's Nikkei 225 slipped 0.3 percent, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.5 percent. It fell 19 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $49.39 per barrel Monday in NY. Brent crude, used to price global oils, gave up 29 cents to $51.85 in London.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude lost 23 cents to $48.94 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The euro edged down to $1.1726 from $1.1751. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.27 percent from 2.26 percent late Monday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was off 0.09%. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) and Nasdaq Composite (COMP) finished lower as well, while the collective aversion to risk boosted the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) and "safe haven" assets like gold.
