United States places new sanctions on Iran following rocket launch

OPINION: Washington's shortsightedness jeopardizes Iran nuke deal

"The Imam Khomeini Space Centre.is a large complex that includes all stages of the preparation, launch, control and guidance of satellites", state television added. Though the newly recertified deal limiting Iran's nuclear program doesn't explicitly bar the development of ballistic missiles, the us considers it a violation of the "spirit" of the deal, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Thursday.

The six entities being sanctioned contribute to Iran's liquid propellant ballistic missiles, the USA treasury department said, including development and manufacturing of engines, launchers, guide-and-control systems and ground support as well as the liquid propellant itself.

In addition, foreign financial institutions that facilitate significant transactions for, or persons that provide material or certain other support to, the entities designated today risk exposure to sanctions that could sever their access to the United States financial system or block their property and interests in property under the USA jurisdiction.

"Space launch vehicles use technologies that are closely related to those of an intercontinental ballistic missile and this launch represents a threatening step by Iran", the Treasury Department said in a statement Friday.

"Nauert also called Iran's rocket launch a "provocative action" that violated the "spirit" of the 2015 nuclear deal". There has been speculation that Tehran has kept close cooperation with Pyongyang over its missile and nuclear programs.

However the MFA says that as a diplomat, the official is immune from "investigation or imprisonment" under global law. It has always been a flashpoint of anti-Israeli protests at times of turmoil in the Palestinian territories.

Tehran denies its missiles are created to carry nuclear warheads, as it has no intention to even seek nukes.

Iran denied on Friday U.S. accusations that its test of a rocket that can put satellites into orbit violated a U.N resolution and said Washington's "rhetoric" was a sign of bad faith towards Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.

"Iran is not and will not be developing nuclear weapons; so by definition can not develop anything created to be capable of delivering them". "Rhetoric and actions from USA show bad faith", Zarif added.

Last week, the USA hit Iran with fresh sanctions, designating 18 individuals and entities for supporting what it said were "illicit Iranian actors or transnational criminal activity". The U.S. Strategic Command, which monitors launches worldwide, confirmed that no satellite was deployed from the rocket.

Iran's state media on Thursday claimed the launch was successful, but US spy agencies quickly determined that assessment was more propaganda than fact. Iran successfully launched its first data-processing satellite, Omid (Hope), into orbit in February 2009.
