Would not want to give any of those billions of dollars in cash to a university.

An ongoing Apple patent dispute has been brought to light again as a ruling passes that the company must pay $506 million to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. WARF had asked for damages to be tripled, claiming that Apple knew of the patent and willfully infringed upon it. Apple, during the trial before a jury, reportedly argued that the patent was not valid and called for a Trademark Office review of the patent's validity. Judge Conley said at the time that Apple could be ordered to pay as much as $862.4 million damages if WARF was able to prove its case. The chip, in turn, went in to power several generations of Apple devices such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, along with several iPad models. It involves U.S. Patent No. 5,871,752, which was issued in 1998 and describes the use of a predictor circuit that can help a processor run more efficiently by analyzing previous mis-speculations.

U.S. District Judge William Conley in Madison added $272 million to a $234 million jury verdict the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation won against Apple in October 2015.
