UK Court to Allow Charlie Gard Parents to Present New Evidence

Parents of terminally ill baby Charlie Gard have 48 hours to present new evidence in their court case

The application came after both Pope Francis and President Donald Trump brought worldwide attention to the case.

While he agreed that a 10 percent chance of survival was significant, Francis said that evidence must be supplied before Thursday's hearing which could decide Charlie's fate.

Justice Francis, who presided over Gard's initial case and ruled that he should be denied treatment and taken off life support, said that he would only overturn his initial ruling if the evidence for nucleoside bypass treatment is "new and powerful".

"If you bring new evidence to me and I consider that evidence changes the situation".

So I find myself ready to argue that these outsiders, the doctors and lawyers, should butt out.

However, specialists at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where he is being cared for, have said the procedure would not help the tot.

Gard's parents, who submitted a petition of over 3,50,000 signatures demanding that they be allowed to take him to the USA for treatment, attended the hearing at the High Court in London.

British and European courts sided with the hospital's original stance that the experimental treatment was "unjustified" and might cause Charlie more suffering with no cure.

Chris Gard and Connie Yates want a judge to rule that 11-month-old Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, should be allowed to undergo a therapy trial in the United States.

China Face Off: Situation Remains Tensed, China Accuses India Of Betrayal
But it is this convention which has confirmed the alignment of the boundary between the two sides at the Sikkim section. Sikkim , which became a part of India in May 1976, is the only state which has a demarcated border with China.

Meanwhile, their own son Maxwell - one of only six people alive in the world with the condition - is now on a "second generation" of drug treatment and can wiggle his arms and legs, as well as being able to move his eyes.

Public protests have taken place in London to stop authorities from taking Charlie off life support. His parents want to take him to the U.S. for experimental therapy, which they say offers their son a chance of improvement.

Katie Gollop QC, who led Great Ormond Street's legal team, suggested that further treatment would leave Charlie in a "condition of existence".

The evidence came from researchers at the Vatican's children's hospital and another facility outside of Britain.

Yates said it was thanks to the high-profile support of Trump and the Pope that the case had got to this stage.

"That the United Kingdom hospital or the government would not allow them to make the decisions about Charlie's life and medical care is unfathomable", he said.

President Donald Trump and Pope Francis.

The ECHR stated that it won't intervene with the Gard family's wishes to seek other treatment options for Charlie.
