Protesters storm town hall after London fire

Hundreds of Grenfell Tower protesters march on Whitehall

Firefighters took more than 24 hours to bring the blaze under control.

The leading body for town and city councils in England and Wales announced Friday it is to conduct an urgent review of fire safety in high-rise buildings in the wake of the Grenfell Tower blaze.

The fire in the block in west London burned for hours, and authorities fear that the official death toll of 30 is likely to rise, with numerous dead unlikely ever to be identified.

She has pledged to hold a public inquiry into the fire that killed 17 people with dozens still missing after it engulfed a 24-storey social housing block in West London, and expressed her sorrow on television after meeting emergency services personnel.

The Guardian newspaper reported that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of panelling in the renovation that ended in May 2016.

"So that 58 would include that 30", Cundy said.

Metropolitan police Commander Stuart Cundy said the figure included the previous death toll of 30, reports the Independent. He says it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead at the charred building.

The Home Office said late Saturday night it will make arrangements for the family of Mohammad Alhajali to "travel to the United Kingdom in these terribly sad circumstances". Some said they had never seen a building fire advance so quickly.

Particular concerns have been raised about the rain- screen cladding used on the outside of the tower, which experts said might have accelerated the inferno that consumed the entire block in just 15 minutes.

It is the same church where the Prime Minister met a group of victims, residents, volunteers and community leaders on Friday, as an angry crowd outside directed shouts of "coward" and "shame on you" towards her.

She also noted that an emergency fund of more than $6 million has begun to be "distributed on the ground so people can buy clothes, food and other essentials".

He said the community in north Kensington, west London, was "frustrated and, yes, angry".

In a related development, facing increasing criticism for not meeting with locals sooner, British Prime Minister Theresa May will visit those injured in the blaze in hospital.

The identification of the victims is proving very hard - which experts attribute to the extreme heat of the fire. Cundy stopped short of suggesting what crimes exactly they were looking into, but he did assert that there was "nothing to suggest the fire was started deliberately". They say they will also use visual elements like tattoos and scars, in the painstaking process.

The tragedy cast a pall on the Trooping the Color festivities that mark the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

Asked repeatedly whether she had misread the public mood, Mrs May did not answer directly but said the focus was on providing support to the victims.

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity".

"It is hard to escape a very sombre national mood", the queen said in a statement to mark her official birthday - an occasion that typically does not result in any public comments from the monarch.

The building was home to more than 100 families.

A top former Conservative politician and Times of London columnist blasted May over her handling of the fire, and said that she must resign.
