Boris Johnson denies plot to topple UK PM Theresa May

Replacement Hammond and Johnson are favourites to take over from May

The newspaper specified that five ministers wanted Johnson to be become the United Kingdom prime minister.

The Foreign Secretary's message to a closed group of MPs has been confirmed to Sky News.

Alex Wickham, news editor at the right wing political blog Guido Fawkes claimed Mr Johnson and Conservative campaign strategist Lynton Crosby have met privately "several times over the last few days".

Johnson tweeted that an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper headlined "Boris set to launch bid to be PM as May clings on" was "tripe".

"Clearly if she's got a worse result than two years ago and is nearly unable to form a government then she I doubt will survive in the long term as Conservative Party leader", he said.

Mrs May's position looked insecure amid disquiet within the Tory party and reports of manouvering by Mr Johnson's supporters. Lots of great work to do for greatest country on earth.

He also warned fellow Conservatives that the media must not be allowed to spread mischief, writing: The public are fed up to the back teeth of politics and politicians and they certainly DO NOT want another election.

Mr Johnson's eight-point message added Tory MPs must "stop the narrative" that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn "somehow won this thing", noting he "barely did better" than Gordon Brown in 2010. "Let's get on with the job", Johnson posted on his Twitter account.

The foreign secretary was contacted by the ministers on Friday morning as the scale of the general election debacle was unfolding and told they would support him if he moved against May.

As her two top aides were told to quit for her to remain in power, there are rumours that Mrs May may not have the keys to number 10 for much longer.
