Harry Kane rescues England in extraordinary finale against Scotland

Will Leigh Griffiths start

Having selected a Spurs player to captain the side instead of a Champion of England, England treated observers to a wholly unremarkable first hour.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had given England the lead in the 70th minute after some poor Scotland defending, but Griffiths picked the ideal moment to break his global duck in his 13th cap.

England's captain, though, had the last word, with a contribution which could extend Scotland's exile from major tournament finals beyond the 20-year mark. We stuck with it and showed tremendous character to come back. England coach Gareth Southgate: "It's a huge moment for the team. You must never turn it in".

"But one lapse of concentration has cost us in the end and instead of getting three points we got one".

England looked more unsafe on the rare occasions they got their opponents turning and Kane had another half chance, with Craig Gordon stranded after coming out of box to head away a long ball.

England were left in no doubt as to what kind of afternoon awaited them before kick-off when "God Save the Queen", the English national anthem, was drowned out by a volley of Scottish boos.

The remarkable match means England remain top of Group F on 14 points from six matches, while Scotland lie fourth with eight points.

Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill had looked somewhat nervy throughout in the centre of England's defence and a lack of judgement from the pair allowed Robertson a chance on the edge of the box but he slashed his strike wide after venturing forward.

No love was lost when play got under way, with Scotland skipper Scott Brown handed a third-minute booking for his early challenge on Dele Alli.

"It was like watching a heavyweight boxer against a middleweight". The Hull player had time to take a touch but sliced over.

"And that's what was so good about Griff, to put the work he put in, and then to have a free-kick when you are exhausted at the end of the game and be able to execute it, was phenomenal".

Livermore hit the post five minutes into the half after his shot took a heavy deflection off Robertson and Scotland, with James McArthur on for the injured James Morrison, survived some nervous seconds before the ball was finally safe.

Oxlade-Chamberlain nearly turned provider moments later when he clipped the ball to the back post only for Lallana to nod over with space around him. I am almost 60, that would probably have been the best result in my career.

For a club, you look for someone who is in the hub of the team, maybe a defender or midfielder who is good at talking and important off the pitch as well.
