French Open semifinals: Murray-Wawrinka, Nadal-Thiem

Big comeback puts Halep in French Open semi against Pliskova

"You expect him to hit a lot of balls, for sure". I don't think he's low physically. Different conditions favour different players on the court - or not necessarily players, but the patterns you can do and can't do.

Enter his coach. "You have to put in consistent work to have consistent results", Lendl said on Thursday.

The 32-year-old Wawrinka, who lost to Murray in last year's semifinals, is the oldest Roland Garros finalist since 1973.

Certainly, with three slams to his name and the prospect of fighting for another one this weekend - after indifferent clay form, shingles, flu, injury and some struggles in his first five matches at this French Open - Murray has cause to wonder if he is in the best possible shape to play Stan Wawrinka in their semi-final on Friday.

Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova advanced to the semifinals of the French Open by beating No. 28 Caroline Garcia of France 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Nadal, bidding for a record-extending 10th title at Roland Garros, was leading 6-2 2-0 when Carreno Busta retired with an abdominal muscle injury in the quarter-final. If Nadal wins the championship on Sunday, it'll be his 15th at a major, breaking a tie with Pete Sampras for second behind Federer's 18. But he has experienced a dip in his form as he now failed to go past the quarter-final stage of Roland Garros for 7 straight years now.

Wawrinka, who had 87 winners in the match, won the French Open title in 2015.

Top-ranked Andy Murray has won the third set against Stan Wawrinka 7-5 to take the lead in the French Open semifinals.

Emmett Till was a 14-year-old black teenager who was killed after being brutally beaten by two white men in MS in 1955. His message is that at the end of the day, it's tough being Black in America, even for a multiple NBA MVP and champ.

After winning the tournament two years ago, Wawrinka fancied his chances of a repeat 12 months ago only to run into Murray at his most tactically and technically astute. He used plenty of drop shots and lobs.

But make no mistake: Wawrinka does not discourage easily.

On a sunny Court Philippe Chatrier, she lobbed Garcia from the back of the court to give herself two match points.

By the anticlimactic close of what Murray termed "a very high-intensity match", he was complaining aloud about having "no legs". And Thiem then took the second set 6-3. He capped it, appropriately, with a backhand down the line, his 87th victor of the day, 51 more than Murray accumulated. Wawrinka has yet to drop a set; Murray has given up three and fought through three tie-breaks. At that moment, each man had won 43 points, their contrasting styles essentially erasing each other.

He had a public power outage at the worst possible moment and could do nothing about it after losing a tight first set - even with four chances left to fix the damage.

"I'd talk to him and we'd discuss it", Lendl said.

Suddenly, he got back on track, taking the third set to nose in front.

When Wawrinka hit a reflex volley passing victor to a corner after a blink-and-you-miss-it exchange as both men stood at the net, he held a set point at 6-5 in the first-set tiebreaker.
