Apple's HomePod speaker pumps up the volume on tech rivals

Here's how Apple is making iMessage take on Facebook Messenger bots

The marketing around Home Pod, which won't kick off in earnest until the fall, will focus heavily on the privacy aspect of Apple's device compared to the Amazon Echo and Google Home, according to people familiar with Apple's strategy.

Schiller had much less to say about HomePod's broader Siri smarts, although the product page on Apple's website hints that it can perform numerous smart home tasks that an Amazon Echo or Google Home can do.

Apple's app store has been around for nine years. Apple also assures that the speaker's data will remain encrypted for maximum security.

The traditionally Apple-hating tech press has pooh-poohed this intelligent speaker / home control device as being yet another example of Apple's "also ran" technology. Siri was introduced as a feature in the iPhone 4S in 2011, three years before Amazon came out with Alexa and the Echo.

It is created to work with the Apple Music subscription service and can produce rich sound while tapping into the artificial intelligence power of Siri. Limp was quick to point out that you could get eight Echo Dots for the price of HomePod, and then connect the Echo Dots to any speaker with a line out connection or Bluetooth. The new speaker that is dubbed HomePod, was launched on Monday in San Jose, California at the Worldwide Developers Conference. The idea is that consumers will never have to mess with settings to optimize their speaker output. With smartphone technology becoming increasingly important and a more viable commercial marketplace for the biggest technology manufacturers, it is clear that Apple wishes to make its move in this increasingly significant niche.

The trend-setting company also is putting new twists on existing products as it delves deeper into virtual reality and a form of artificial intelligence called machine learning.

The HomePod is equipped with the virtual assistant Siri and can answer basic questions ("Who is playing drums on this song?" or "What's the weather forecast?") and control other smart home devices. Although Apple has the high hopes of wiping out all other smart speakers, I wanted to find out if Apple's new HomePod is a true Sonos competitor.

Apple WWDC showcases HomePod smart speaker and new operating system
Leading up to WWDC, the leading rumor was that Apple was set to compete with Amazon and Google for a new in-home voice assistant. It has since been discontinued from Apple , though it can still be bought on other sites, such as Amazon, for around £535.

He recently said: "I've said this a million times before - the person holding an Oasis reunion back is Noel , not me". It wasn't really to say "happy birthday, you're 50", it was to say "he's 50!'", Liam quipped: "Yeah, and I'm 44".

Apple says it's giving more emphasis to sound quality, not just smarts.

Apple has announced a new smart speaker device and a new iPad Pro, as well as upgrades to its mobile and desktop operating systems.

HomePod is a wireless speaker you can talk to by saying, "Hey Siri". Initially, it will only be available in the US, UK and Australia. The research firm eMarketer says than 35 million people in the US are expected to use a voice-activated speaker at least once a month this year, more than double its estimate from last year. Amazon has already sold 15 million Echo speakers, according to Forrester, and it is nearly ready to launch its next-generation device that will feature a screen to display more information.

The speaker, while expected by some industry watchers, marked Apple's first new product announcement since the Apple Watch in September 2014. Apple's entry into the market could change that.

Next up was Apple's new version of macOS called High Sierra, which was launched with new Safari browser.

The newly updated MacBook laptops are now available.

Among the new features of iOS 11 is the ability to make person-to-person payments through Apple's messaging app, thanks to new integration with the Apple Pay system.
