Top U.S. diplomat in Beijing resigns over climate treaty decision

A top diplomat at the U.S. embassy in Beijing has stepped down, apparently because he disagreed with President Donald Trump's climate change policy.

According to a State Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to be more candid, Rank was unwilling to deliver the démarche.

The acting US ambassador to China said on Monday that he is resigning from his post in Beijing over Trump's plan to ditch the climate agreement.

The number two official at the US embassy in Beijing, a 27-year veteran of the foreign service, has resigned.

Meanwhile, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg submitted a statement to the United Nations on Monday that over 1,000 U.S. governors, mayors, businesses, universities and others will continue to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement abandoned by Trump last week. Branstad has been confirmed for his post but is undergoing ambassador training.

"He has retired from the foreign service", said Anna Richey-Allen, a spokeswoman for the State Department's East Asia Bureau.

The state department said Deputy Chief of Mission David Rank had resigned. "We appreciate his years of dedicated service to the State Department", the official told ABC News.

News of Rank's resignation was broken by John Pomfret, an editor at the SupChina news site.

A day earlier, the acting ambassador to Britain, Lewis A. Lukens, tweeted his support of London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack there.

The American public is more aligned with Rank than President Trump.

Despite Trump's decision to withdraw from the climate agreement, dozens of governors and mayors from states and cities across the USA have vowed to continue to honor the goals of the accord to reduce global warming.

Polley said the embassy informed China's foreign affairs ministry on Monday that Jonathan Fritz would be serving as charge d'affaires.

MATT LAUER: There is some more fallout this morning over President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Chacon could not immediately be reached for comment. "In all his years working for me, I never even knew his politics; exactly what you'd hope for from a career Foreign Service officer".

Though Rank told his staff he had expected to retire by the end of the year, being acting ambassador for a large and important embassy like the one in Beijing would have put him line to become ambassador in another, smaller country.
