Explosions, gunfire reported at Resorts World Manila in Philippines

Philippines reports a masked gunman began firing on guests and hotel employees fleeing the scene at the Resorts World Manila complex. The shooter reportedly did not aim at any person during his attack.

The Philippines have been troubled by terrorism lately, as government forces are battling ISIS-affiliated soldiers for control of the city of Marawi, a mostly Muslim city on the southern island of Mindanao. The attack has sparked fears that the militants may attack elsewhere to divert the focus of thousands of troops trying to quell the siege.

Smoke billows from the Resorts World building in Pasay City, Metro Manila as police guard employees and the public (inset) who fled.

Dela Rosa told reporters at the scene that the gunman stole gambling chips, shot an LED monitor and set ablaze gambling tables by pouring gasoline on them.

Dela Rosa described the gunman as "foreign-looking, a Caucasian, about six feet tall" and said he spoke English.

It is one of the busiest airports in the world.

The gunman did not shoot anyone but disappeared into the chaos of smoke and running people, leading to a manhunt throughout the casino, hotel and shopping complex that ended just after dawn.

It said police, fire trucks and a Swat team were in the area.

Police said there had been no confirmed fatalities but 30 people had been injured in the stampede and from inhaling smoke.

Dela Rosa said he could not say if it was terrorist attack, but emphasised the gunman did not shoot anyone and there had been no reports of hostages being taken. A resort spokesman said the suspect was believed to still be in the building at 4 a.m. local time.

Trump said Thursday that "It is really very sad as to what's going on throughout the world with terror".

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law last week across the southern region of Mindanao to crush what he said was a rising threat of Islamic State there.

Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, Trump said he is "closely monitoring the situation" and will continue to provide updates.

Earlier in the day, the SITE Intelligence Group had reported that a "Filipino ISIS operative" said the militant group's "lone wolf soldiers" were responsible for the attack - though that report appears to have been contradicted by Philippine authorities.
