Andretti rules Indy _ and other takeaways from the 500

Takuma Sato of Japan celebrates as he crosses the Yard of Bricks to win the Indianapolis 500 auto race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday

"I know how big this news is going to be tomorrow when they wake up in Japan". It happened, just not by the one some expected.

In a Chevrolet for Team Penske, Castroneves briefly took the lead but couldn't hold it as Sato grabbed it back.

After spending seven years in Formula One, Sato came to the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2010. It was Sato's second career IndyCar victory. For Andretti Autosport, this marks back-to-back Monday morning victory photo ceremonies, with Alexander Rossi taking the checkered flag a year ago.

Andretti the team owner now has five total Indy 500 wins, moving past A.J. Foyt into a tie for second with Chip Ganassi and Lou Moore for most among owners.

"You did great, especially for your first time", Castroneves said.

"I'm so I happy I made it", he said.

Takuma Sato will make his way to the Motor City this week with the title as Indianapolis 500 champion. The best previous finish by a Japanese driver was fifth by Tora Takagi in 2003.

Unfortunately for Alonso, misfortune did seem to follow him at every turn.

"So for the future, Canada, obviously we will try to keep improving", he said. "It was so close". "It was so close"."I really thought we had it", the Brazilian said.He almost got it right.Sato, who started from the second row, beat Castroneves by two-tenths of a second."We kept pushing on, kept making up positions", the 23-year-old from Dubai said.

Underdog Cavs insist they have plenty of bite for Finals
It's the matchup most expected, the matchup most predicted, and probably the matchup the Cavaliers and Warriors wanted as well. For the record, James feels quite confident about evening his career Finals record to 4-4 with a win over Golden State.

Arsenal edge Chelsea to lift English FA Cup
Chelsea never properly recovered from that body blow and Arsenal could have been out of sight before halftime. Surveying the Arsenal team-sheet before kick-off must have made encouraging viewing for Chelsea's forwards.

He nearly got it right.

"We kept pushing on, kept making up positions", the 23-year-old from Dubai said. "When I saw Dixon flipping, I didn't think it would be so fast". Always I invite 100, 150 kids from the devastated area, and we do a go-karting event. But the focus became more intense in the lead-up to the biggest race of the season.

Fernando Alonso's Indianapolis 500 dream went up in the smoke of a blown engine on Sunday that ended a brilliant Brickyard debut by the Formula One star. "Today, (it) was not possible". Hunter-Reay led 28 laps and was a strong contender late. "When Helio came up beside me with three laps to go, I decided this was the moment and I just had to go for it". "You know? It came off beautifully", Sato said.

"Helio is just a gentleman, and I knew I was racing against a real champion", he said. In past years, kind of dating to the era of single supply, we had to build engines more for reliability than for performance, because we knew we were going to win the race no matter what. "Thanks to Indianapolis, thanks to the fans". I feel really bad for Fernando. "I'm really proud to race here". "When we did end up getting out front, the vehicle was really quick and you can see why this place is so special and so electric in that moment". Hunter-Reay also failed to win the 500 in 2016 after leading the most laps (52), and could not hide his frustration.

The hectic race featured 35 lead changes among a race-record 15 drivers. He boldly passed both Jones and Castroneves on the outside of Turn 1 on the 179th lap.

Pole sitter Scott Dixon, already having a rough week because he was robbed at gunpoint at Taco Bell hours after turning the fastest qualifying effort in 21 years, was knocked out of the race in a terrifying crash in which his auto sailed through the air and landed cockpit-first atop the inside safety fence. Neither driver was injured. He was trying to join elite company as the only drivers to win here four times. "I still just can not believe it". It was definitely a rough ride. We've had the speed this month. "It was job done, and the last two laps the vehicle worked beautifully".

The Spaniard shunned the glamour and glitz of the Monaco Grand Prix for the festival of Americana that is the Indy 500. He was later released after initially complaining of discomfort in his chest. Five laps later, Oriol Servia clipped James Davison, sending the Coyne driver spinning and gathering up Will Power, James Hinchcliffe and Josef Newgarden in a five-car pinball carom. None of the drivers was injured.

Sato became the first Japanese driver to win the Indy 500 and the first 40-year-old victor since Eddie Cheever in 1998 when he took the checkered flag at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon. Castroneves now leads the IndyCar championship by 11 points over Simon Pagenaud, Sato and Dixon.

Last year, it was with rookie Alexander Rossi.
