Alaska volcano erupts again; aviation alert raised to red

Alaskan volcano erupts, sending ash 35000 feet into air

Alaska's Bogoslof Volcano erupted Sunday, sending a plume of ash at least 35,000 feet into the air and temporarily triggering the highest aviation alert, scientists say.

After the eruption, the Aviation Color Code was raised to red, the highest level.

Bogoslof's eruption prompted concerns for aircraft safety, as volcanic ash ejected into the atmosphere can severely impair a plane's engines. He further added, "Lightning in the Aleutians is mostly happened because of volcanic plumes, as the meteorological conditions for lightning are not common".

This is not the first time for Bogoslof Volcano to erupt and cause troubles; there were eight records of eruption incidents, the most recent eruption in 1992.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory or AVO claims that the ash cloud from the Bogoslof Volcano may rise to heights of 45,000 feet in the coming days.

The eruption took almost 50 minutes, the AVO said.

Volcano eruptions have wreaked havoc on air travel in the past, not to mention caused significant environmental impact.

According to the AVO, no further ash emissions have occurred since the explosion. Flights have been rerouted and even grounded in the past few months as a direct result of ash clouds spewing from Bogoslof. Ash fallout was occurring to the west of the site, according to AVO.

It warns that continuing low-level activity could "pose a hazard in the immediate vicinity of the volcano". The volcano that took place in early 2017 significantly changes the shape and coastline of the island and the land mass increased by 3 times in size between early 2015 and January of this year.
