Sheffield professor's advice on how to protect yourself — NHS cyber attack

WannaCry is not just a ransomware, but also a worm.

The malware was spread by fake emails, infecting computers on key networks over the weekend.

The attacks exploit vulnerabilities in old Windows operating systems.

Railway stations, post delivery, petrol stations, hospitals, office buildings, shopping centres and government services also were affected, Xinhua said, citing the Threat Intelligence Centre of Qihoo 360, a Chinese internet security services company. According to the company, the vulnerability used by WannaCry was stolen from the NSA.

"Security experts will be available on the helpline number on May 16 and 17".

After the WannaCry attack, Microsoft went out of its way to ensure the safety of users. The attack primarily targeted users of Windows XP, an aging operating system for Microsoft. These could include smart antivirus programs that are updated daily and one-way firewalls that prevent all unauthorised software from entering critical networks.

The ransomware targets all versions of Windows before the Windows 10 if they have not been patched for MS17-10. "This messes up with the security system in the computer and makes it vulnerable to attacks", Mukesh says.

Armed men stormed state Radio, Television building in Jalalabad, Afghanistan
So-called Islamic State has claimed the attack, which is near an IS stronghold on the eastern border with Pakistan. Last month the USA military dropped its largest non- nuclear bomb in Nangarhar, killing dozens of IS militants.

West Ham fans angry following heavy home defeat to Liverpool
Following Arsenal's 4-1 win at Stoke City, both teams are on the same goal difference of +29 with the Gunners a point behind them. Sturridge has not played 90 minutes in the Premier League for over a year - it was since May 11 last season against Chelsea.

The new Twin Peaks trailer has us more intrigued than ever
In its second week, Twin Peaks will air the third and fourth parts back-to-back on Showtime, starting at 9 p.m. The two seemingly are in a serious talk as Cole is seen calling out his colleague's name.

Microsoft released fixes for the vulnerability in March, but computers that didn't run the update were subject to the ransom attack.

They proposed a plan to improve security that included a replacement of outdated systems "as a matter of urgency", calling the continued use "one of the most pressing issues facing IT infrastructure" in the NHS.

"There are so many states that have been affected".

A cyber virus which caused turmoil within the NHS could have been much worse, a computer expert at the University of Sheffield has claimed.

.

"We are in the second wave", said Matthieu Suiche of the cybersecurity firm Comae Technologies on Sunday, per The New York Times. It brings us to another important point. The first victims who did not pay the $300 ransom are now facing a demand of $600.

Employees booting up computers at work Monday could see red as they discover they're victims of a global "ransomware" cyberattack that created chaos in 150 countries and could wreak even greater havoc as more malicious variations appear. A Twitter bot tracking payments to Bitcoin wallets set up by Shadow Brokers reveals that dozens of people have paid the amount in Bitcoin.

Microsoft is criticizing government agencies for hoarding software flaws and keeping them secret, calling a massive, new ransomware attack a "wake-up call" to this problem. If past ransomware attacks are any guide, chances are pretty high that the data is gone forever.
