South Carolina high school student dies after drinking too much caffeine

Davis Cripe

Too much caffeine caused the death of a 16-year-old high school student from SC who collapsed during class last month, according to the county coroner.

Watts says Cripe drank a large Mountain Dew, a latte from McDonald's and an energy drink in the two hours before his heart fell out of rhythm at Spring Hill High School near Chapin on April 26.

A caffeine overdose killed a SC teenager last month, the Richland County coroner said Monday.

Holding back tears, Sean Cripe implored parents to talk with their kids about the dangers of energy drinks and consuming too much caffeine.

'And teenagers and students, please stop buying them.

The website states fatalities related to energy drinks are even more unlikely, due to the: 'sheer amount of liquid that would need to be ingested at one time'. After that he consumed the Diet Mountain Dew and the energy drink.

Watts says like many, Cripe was doing something he thought was totally harmless, but Watts said the drinks can be very risky.

"What we want to do here today is to make people understand that these drinks - this amount of caffeine, how it's ingested, can have dire consequences".

Among those at the news conference Monday was the teen's father, Sean Cripe. Watts says his intention is not to bash particular suppliers of caffeine-laden products, but instead to help educate the public on very real safety concerns. "We lost Davis from a totally legal substance".

Watts says that the teen had no signs of a preexisting, undiagnosed heart issue that would have contributed to his death.

The third incident cited by the website was about a Japanese man who died after mixing energy drinks with caffeine pills.

"You can have five people line up right here and all of them do the exact same thing that happened with him that day - drink more - and it may not have any kind of effect on them at all", he said.

It's not know what type of energy drink Davis consumed before he passed away.

Now, a SC coroner is saying that Davis' caffeine consumption led to his death.
