Trump launches commission to investigate voter fraud

President Donald Trump plans to create a commission on Thursday to investigate voter fraud and voter suppression, a White House official said, a move that follows Trump's unsubstantiated claims of massive voter fraud in the 2016 USA election.

Look forward to seeing final results of VoteStand. He has long argued that illegal voting, especially by noncitizens, is rampant. We must do better! We need a little more time.

In a lunch meeting with senators in February, Mr Trump said that he and former Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte would have won in New Hampshire if not for voters bused in from out of state. He was asked about this disputed claim, which he said he would "be proved right about that, too". But Trump had an explanation: voter fraud.

President Trump on Thursday launched a long-promised commission on "election integrity," rekindling a controversy over the prevalence of voter fraud at USA polls. The office identified just 7 cases from the 2016 general election.

"So what this commission is going to do is gather data from all 50 states as well as from the federal government", says Kobach.

Michael Waldman, president of the New York-based Brennan Center for Justice, said the commission was formed to "find proof of the president's absurd claim" about millions of people voting illegally. "Rhetorical sloppiness fosters the misperception that fraud by voters is prevalent", the report stated. The integrity of elections has been questioned by some due to dead people voting, people voting a few times or voting in more than one state and voting machines changing votes from one candidate to another.

Order limits IRS action on religious organizations
As Laycock said, this all "may lead to good things for believers down the road, but it does nothing immediately". Critics said the first point was essentially boilerplate rhetoric extolling religious freedom.

Indeed, in the country at large, numerous studies have found that the incidence of voter impersonation in particular is vanishingly small.

Election integrity watchdogs applauded the move and noted that the scale of fraud and error has always been hard to gauge. Zero evidence of fraud. What they're really anxious about is aging voting equipment that needs to be replaced and the potential for Russians to hack into future elections. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in a prepared statement. Kobach's involvement shows that this is a deadly serious enterprise, one whose goal is to take Republican vote suppression efforts nationwide. But it is very rare - in most instances only concerning individual ballots.

But after talking it through with his staff, Dunlap told BuzzFeed News that he decided it was better to be involved than not. They could start by reviewing voting systems in other advanced Western nations, which usually require some sort of identification at the polling station, and probe the weaknesses in both the registration and counting mechanisms in the systems used by the states.

The ACLU, meanwhile, filed a Freedom of Information Act request Thursday "seeking information that the Trump administration is using as the basis for its voter fraud claims". "Let's see if any of them staff the commission".

Trump announced Thursday that the 15-member panel, which he will appoint, would examine cases of "improper" and "fraudulent" registration and voting. And the "vast majority" of these crimes happened in state and local elections, according to True the Vote spokesman Logan Churchwell.
